In my opinion, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is the best venue of its type in all of northern Nevada. Since opening in 1967, the Pioneer Center has undergone a series of upgrades and kept up with the times - this is a state-of-the-art performance theater.

The Buckminster Fuller style geodesic dome building was designed by the Oklahoma City architectural firm of Bozalis, Dickinson and Roloff. It has withstood the test of time as one of Reno's most distinctive and important buildings. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Shows at the Pioneer Center

The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts stages a variety of shows throughout the year. Some of these include holiday shows by A.V.A Ballet Theatre and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, both of which are Pioneer Center resident companies. Other individual shows by local and visiting companies play throughout the year.

Pioneer Center Location and Parking

The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is located at 100 S. Virginia Street in downtown Reno. It is on the east side of the street, directly across from the old Washoe County Courthouse.

The Pioneer Center does not own any parking areas, but there are plenty of places nearby. The most convenient is the Washoe County lot across the street and south of the courthouse. This lot holds several hundred cars and is free to use in the evenings after 5 p.m. and all day on weekends. The much smaller Wells Fargo lot is also free during evenings and weekends. For more parking information, visit "Where to Park in Downtown Reno."

Pioneer Underground

Pioneer Underground is a small, intimate performance venue attached to the Pioneer Center. The entrance is from the plaza in front of the main building, next to the pioneer family statue. This theater is mainly used for stand-up comedians performing with Reno-Tahoe Comedy. You can see who is playing and when at the Pioneer Underground Event Calendar page.
