Winter break activities for children and families around Reno and Sparks include camps and other things to do from several area organizations. According to the "Washoe County School District Calendar: 2023-2024 School Year," winter break is December 25, 2023 to January 5, 2024. Add in weekends on each end and you get lots of days to fill while the kids are out of school.

Vacation Station Winter Break Camp from Reno Parks & Rec

December 25 - 29, 2023, and January 2 - 5, 2024, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Register online or call (775) 334-2262 or (775) 334-2260 to register by phone. Camp is for ages 6 to 12.5. Camps are at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, Plumas Gym and Jessie Beck Elementary School. The cost is $130 per child per week. Weekly registration only - no daily fee available. Space is limited - first come, first served. Financial assistance is available.

Winter Break Camp at The Discovery Museum

December 26 - 29, 2023 and January 2 - 5, 2024, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Choose from the unique and exciting camps for students in kindergarten through 7th grade. Camps fill up quickly. If the camp you’d like to register for is full, you can be added to the waiting list. We will notify you if a spot opens up. Visit the website for camp details and to register online. Arts for All Nevada Winter Break Creativity Camps

December 26 - 29, 2023 and January 2 - 5, 2024. These camps allow kids ages 6 to 10 to participate in visual arts and more. The camp themes are Winter Creativity: Icy Art Exploration and Winter Creativity: Multimedia Extravaganza. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Winter Break Kidz Kamp with Sparks Parks and Recreation

December 27 - 29, 2023 and January 3 - 5, 2024. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Looking for festive holiday activities for your children (Kindergarten through 5th grade) during the winter break? This program offers arts and crafts, water play and active games. The cost is $108 per week or $90 for Sparks residents. Winter Break Camp: Fun with Clay

Monday through Friday, January 1 - 5, 2024, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Kids ages 7 – 11 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay. Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. Snack and materials are included. You can register online. At the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 West Liberty St. in Reno.

Winter Break Camp: Digital Art and Illustration

Monday through Friday, January 1 - 5, 2024, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Kids ages 7 – 11 will have fun playing on the Museum's iPad Pros as they work on story-boarding, character design and animation. A mid-camp snack and all materials are included with registration. You can register online. At the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 West Liberty St. in Reno.

Winter Break Camp: Engineer Your Imagination: S.T.E.A.M. for Curious Minds

Monday through Friday, January 1 - 5, 2024, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students age 7 – 11 will expand their skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration while exploring the intersection between science, technology, engineering, art, and math in this dynamic camp. Winter Break Lego Camp at Spanish Springs Library

Tuesday through Thursday, December 26 - 28, 2023, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Spanish Springs Library is hosting a winter Lego Robotics Camp for ages 5 to 7. Participants will learn how to build and code Lego Robots to climb ramps and near vertical walls using gears, pullies and anchors. Come make your robot climb to new heights. Sign up for our 3 day camp and let them explore. Registration is required. Guardians of participants will need to stay in the library while camp is running.

Winter Break Camp from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation

Wednesday through Friday, January 3 - 5, 2024, 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Before and after care available. We are so excited to be putting on our first Winter Wetland Stewards Camp. At this 3 day camp campers will learn and explore winter survivalists challenges, and parents/guardians will be invited to join in on the fun each afternoon. Online registration available. At the Rosewood Nature Study Area in east Reno.

Lego Camp: Winter World Adventure at Sierra View Library

Wednesday through Friday, January 3 - 5, 2024, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Let's go on a Winter World Adventure with LEGO. In this 3 day camp you'll explore summer in Sydney, Australia, ski in the Swiss Alps, and trek to Canada for igloo fun. Registration is required. Best for ages 6 and up.

Winter Break Camp at KIDS University at UNR - Zen Art: Using the Right Side of Your Brain

Tuesday through Friday, January 2 - 5, 2024, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For kids ages 7 to 9. Unleash the magic of your right brain in a whimsical journey of creativity and self-expression. Explore Zen Art, a delightful blend of relaxation, boundless imagination and fun. Embark on this artistic adventure, where campers tap into their inner artists and let the joy of imagination flow freely as they paint, draw, craft and create masterpieces. Winter Kid Craft from The Holland Project

January 2 - 5, 2024, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Hands-on craft workshops for kids ages 5 – 12 (recommended, but all ages welcome). Each morning workshop includes two winter themed craft projects exploring a wide variety of materials and techniques. Pre-registration is required and it's $30 per kid for each day or all four days for $100 per kid. Fees cover all materials and participants will leave with different crafts each day. The Holland Project is at 140 Vesta St. in Reno.

Go Play in the Snow

There are some excellent snow play places near Reno and Sparks. Many of these areas, like Tahoe Meadows off the Mt. Rose Highway, are on public land and free for snow play. Many of the Lake Tahoe area ski resorts have sledding and tubing hills with lifts. These aren't free, but they can be lots of fun and are way cheaper than lift tickets.

Go Ice Skating

You can get on the ice at the Ice Rink at Grand Sierra Resort. This rink is open for 4 sessions per day (5 on weekends) and the public is invited (not just hotel guests). It is scheduled to be open through February, 2024.

A second Reno ice rink, Reno Ice, is a full-service ice skating facility that offers skating sessions for the public. Visit the website to learn about signing up for these sessions. You must register online for the sessions and there are no walk-ins.

Go to the Movies

The Reno metro area offers several multi-screen theaters, a low-cost cinema at the Grand Sierra Resort, an IMAX theater in Sparks and feature films and star shows at the Fleischmann Planetarium.
