Fall break activities for children and families around Reno and Sparks include camps and other things to do from several area organizations. According to the "Washoe County School District Calendar: 2026-2027 School Year," fall break 2026 is October 5 through 9. Add in weekends on each end and you get 9 days to fill while the kids are out of school.

October 5 - 9, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For ages 8 to 13. Whether searching for signs of wildlife, exploring the forest, learning about seasonal changes, or enjoying time around the campfire, campers will have the opportunity to adventure into Galena Creek Recreation Area and discover the wonders of nature through hands-on exploration, outdoor activities, and unforgettable fall adventures. At Galena Creek Visitor Center, 18250 Mount Rose Hwy. in south Reno.

October 5 - 9, 2026. These camps are popular and the number of kids is limited, so sign up as soon as you can to ensure your child a spot. Online registration is available at the Camp Discovery web page. The information phone number is (775) 786-1000. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost is $325 for members, $375 for non-members. There are camps for different age groups, from Kindergarten through 4th grade - Very Hungry Camper (Kindergarten), Galaxy Explorers (grades 1 - 2), and Science of Oz (grades 3 - 4). October 5 - 9, 2026, ages 6 to 10, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lake Mansion, 250 Court Street and Arlington Avenue in Reno. Get into the Halloween spirit with a week of spooky-themed art projects inspired by ghosts, pumpkins, bats, black cats, haunted houses, and more. $375 for all 5 days. October 5 - 9, 2026. Registration will be online only, with phone and in person assistance available as needed. Space is limited, please register early. Weekly registration only - no daily rates. Camp is for kids ages 5 to 12.5. Fee is $150 per child for the week. Financial assistance (scholarships) is available. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. October 5 - 9, 2026. There will be fall break programs providing a fun and safe environment for kids in 1st through 6th grades. Daily sessions are from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The program features daily games, themed activities, outdoor play, swimming, and field trips. Contact Sparks Parks & Recreation at (775) 353-2376. Camp for all age groups is $218 for Sparks residents, $261 for non-residents. Number of kids limited - register as early as possible. Programs will be held at the Recreation Gym, 98 Richards Way.

October 5 - 9, 2026. Join us for "The Villain's Lair." Camp is divided into sections for grades K - 3 and grades 4 - 6, both from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.. It's $295 per student. October 5 - 9, 2026. Join us for "Step into the Bad Side," an exploration of musical theater villains. Camp is for grades 7 to 10, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. It's $295 per student. Teen performers will explore the darker, more dramatic side of musical theater through some of Broadway and musical theater's most memorable villains. October 5 - 9, 2026. The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows is having fall break activities at these club locations - Donald W. Reynolds Facility, Neil Road, Lemmon Valley, William N. Pennington Facility, and Donald L. Carano Youth Center. Each location features different activities and field trips. The registration fee is $50 for members, with optional field trips costing extra. Fun with Clay - October 5 - 9, 2026, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. For kids ages 7 to 11. Instruction will include basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. Children will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class. All works will be fired in the Museum's kiln. Snack and materials are included.

Creative Drawing - October 5 - 9, 2026, 9 a.m to 12 p.m. For kids ages 7 to 11. This exciting and hands-on camp is designed to spark imagination while teaching the fundamentals of art.

Teen Camp: Digital Art and Illustration - October 5 - 9, 2026, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For teens ages 12 to 15. Teens will explore the basics of Procreate on the Museum's iPad Pros as they work on story-boarding, character design and animation. All supplies and a mid-class snack are provided.

You'll find fun activities at your local library branch during fall break. The Washoe County Library System offers many free events, activities, and presentations. Children of all ages, families, and adults will find something of interest at every library branch in Washoe County.

October 5 - 9, 2026. Full play "Trials of Robin Hood" camp. "Fire Exit" will be a play for older students. This camp ends with a free community performance on October 9 at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. The cost is $335. It is for ages 7 to 17 and you can register online. Limited to 40 actors and 10 backstage. Pre-registration required. For more information, call (775) 313-3900.

The Reno metro area offers several multi-screen theaters, a low-cost cinema at the Grand Sierra Resort, feature films and star shows at the Fleischmann Planetarium, and in Sparks, an IMAX theater and one of the few real-live drive-in theaters in America still showing movies.

Visit a Park, take a Hike

Reno, Sparks and Washoe County public parks and trails are open to outside activities. When the weather is nice, it is good to get outside and enjoy open spaces after being cooped up. There are some coronavirus restrictions, so be sure to check before you go.
