Big events during July, 2023 include... Summer Reading Challenge - through July 31, 2023. This year's challenge theme is "All Together Now," and the Washoe County Library is the perfect place to come together and create shared experiences. Spend the summer reading, learning, and spreading kindness with us. We're celebrating with a series of kickoff parties at our branches and will have fun events throughout the summer. Artown Opening Night - Saturday, July 1, 2023. Come to Wingfield Park for the start to Artown, which lasts the whole month of July. The featured act on opening night is Ranky Panky. The opening celebration begins earlier with Discover the Arts at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center, followed the Marchfourth Marching Band parade down Riverside Drive. This is just the beginning of Artown, with things to do, see and enjoy through July 31. Dragon Lights Reno - June 30 through August 13, 2023. Dragon Lights Reno will again illuminate the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Rancho San Rafael Park with all new lantern displays. Forty-two larger-than-life lantern sculptures, lit by thousands of LED lights, will transform the arboretum into a luminous wonderland during mid-summer nights. Dragon Lights Reno includes an interactive playground with lantern displays that visitors can touch, play with, and even sit on. Inside the arboretum, visitors will also find a Lantern Food Court that offers a wide selection of food and drinks from both local and traveling food vendors. It is best to purchase tickets online ahead of time. Tickets at the box office may not be available on any night that the festival reaches capacity. Be sure to visit the website for more details about the event and obtaining tickets. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival - June 30 - August 20, 2023. Come to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe to enjoy Shakespeare performances and other entertainment. These shows are held in what's been called America's most beautiful venue. Visit my article for details about tickets, seating, getting to Sand Harbor and other important information. Guided Walking Tours from HRPS - Saturday, July 1, 2023. The first guided walking tour in July from the Historic Reno Preservation Society is "Truckee River All the Time" at 9 a.m. Several more walks are scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays in July. Join in to learn about many aspects of Reno's colorful history. Plastic Free July - The Plastic Free July website is a great motivator and resource to start your plastic-free lifestyle. Patriotic Pops at the Park - Monday, July 3, 2023, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Join the Reno Philharmonic to celebrate the birth of our nation with a spectacular night of music at Greater Nevada Field. You will enjoy an unforgettable evening of patriotic tunes performed by the best musicians in town. Tickets are available online. Greater Nevada Field is at 250 Evans Ave. in Reno. Great American Craft Fair - Wednesday, July 4, 2023, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More that 100 handmade fine art and craft vendors. There will be Food Trucks in the Park and the Great American Parade. Free admission. At McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Dr. in Reno. Levitt AMP Carson City 2023 at the Brewery Arts Center - Saturday, July 1, 2023. MarchFourth is a kaleidoscope of musical and visual energy that inspires unabashed dancing and an atmosphere of celebration. These are all free outdoor concerts. The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open setting. There will be food trucks, drink vendors and kid's activities at every concert. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota Streets in Carson City. The next show is on July 8, featuring Noah Vonne with opening act KatBoss. Concerts continue through August 19, 2023. 4th of July Fireworks and Celebrations - Tuesday, July 4, 2023. Check out the big fireworks lighting up the skies, plus other 4th of July activities going on around the area. Reno Aces Baseball - July 4, 2023, 6:35 p.m. The Aces take on the Tacoma Rainiers for this Independence Day game, capped off with a fireworks spectacular. More games vs. the Rainiers are July 5 - 9, with fireworks following the game on July 7. Summer Music Series at Lazy 5 Regional Park - Friday, July 5, 2023. Today's show is Nevada 445. Other concerts with a variety of entertainers will follow on Wednesday evenings through August 16. Concerts are free and begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring the family and a picnic to enjoy the show. No pets, smoking or glass containers allowed. Lazy 5 Regional Park is at 7100 Pyramid Way out in Spanish Springs. Galena Campfire Program Series - Raptor Adventures! - Friday, July 7, 2023, 8 p.m. Remember the fun had around the campfire as a kid? The Galena Campfire Program Series is all about sharing that experience with the family. A different presenter is featured each week, including a variety of cultural music experiences, plus fun educational programs and marshmallow roasting. Blankets, low-back chairs, bug spray and flashlights are recommended. The programs are free, though donations are welcomed to support the program. Treats to enjoy around the campfire at 8 p.m. will be available. Every Friday through August 5, 2022. At Eagle Meadow, Galena Creek Regional Park, North Entrance, 18250 Mt. Rose Hwy., Reno. Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, July 8, 2023. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lavender Day - Saturday, July 8, 2023, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy the scent of lavender, demonstrations on planting, harvesting, and infusing with lavender and other mini-presentations. Artists, music, refreshments and vendors will be available. Presented by the May Arboretum Society. At the May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Park. Sierra Nevada Lavender & Honey Festival - Sunday, July 9, 2023, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This "scent-sational" event features all things lavender and honey along with arts and crafts, food, demonstrations, music, entertainment and more. At Idlewild Park in Reno. American Century Championship - Wednesday through Sunday, July 12 - 16, 2023. The 34th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament will be at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course near South Lake Tahoe and Stateline. Players have been Charles Barkley Tony Romo, Larry the Cable Guy, Roger Clemens, Steph Curry, John Elway, Andre Iguodala, Heather LeMaster, Dan Quayle, Bret Saberhagen, Joe Theismann, Michael Waltrip, and many, many more. Tickets are available online. Abbey Road at The Glow Plaza - Friday and Saturday, July 14 - 15, 2023, 4 p.m. The Glow Plaza will be transformed into a Beatles lover's paradise with Abbey Road at the Glow Plaza, a tribute to The Beatles. This event promises to be the biggest of its kind in the western United States, featuring a lineup of talented tribute bands performing the iconic group's greatest hits. Tickets are available online. The Glow Plaza is next to the J Resort, 345 N. Arlington Avenue. Barracuda Championship PGA Golf - Monday through Sunday, July 17 - 23, 2023. Enjoy Reno's PGA golf tournament, the only one in northern California / Nevada. The tournament is played at Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee, CA. This is a charity event with live television coverage on the Golf Channel. Tickets are available online. Galena Campfire Program Series - Ukulele Music in the forest with Aria 51 - Friday, July 14, 2023, 8 p.m. Remember the fun had around the campfire as a kid? The Galena Campfire Program Series is all about sharing that experience with the family. A different presenter is featured each week, including a variety of cultural music experiences, plus fun educational programs and marshmallow roasting. Discover Your Parks Series - Friday, July 21, 2023, 6 p.m. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is presenting this free discovery series in different parks located in Washoe County from March through November 2023. The July presentation is Art Town in the Park at Oxbow Nature Study Area. Capacity is limited and you must register online from the website for each program. Walks with Washoe County Park Rangers - Tuesday, July 25, 2023, 10 a.m. This walk is on Dorostkar Park Nature Trail. It's free to participate. Discover new trails and learn more about your local environment in various Washoe County parks and open space habitats. Visit the website to preregister. The remaining 2023 walk are on August 29. Classical Tahoe 2023 - July 9 - August 17, 2023. Each summer, Classical Tahoe brings together America’s leading classical musicians for a 16-concert series that delights audiences with its superb musicians, intimate outdoor pavilion, educational programs, and majestic Lake Tahoe settings. The performance schedule and tickets are available online. Night in the Country Music Festival - Thursday through Saturday, July 20 - 22, 2023. Nevada's longest running country music festival is held in Yerington. This year, the festival will bring in big-name artists with Big & Rich, Hardy, Parker McCollum, Ernest and lots more. The main stage will feature several acts each night. There is on-site camping and lots of other activities. (775) 463-5114. Junior Naturalist Program from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, July 22, 2023, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This month the program is near the Pah Rah Interpretive Trail at Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks. Junior Naturalists will practice being herpetologists this month and will explore the types of reptiles and amphibians that can be found in Northern Nevada. This outdoor program is for kids of all ages and it's free. You can register online. Northern Nevada Pride Parade and Festival - Saturday, July 22, 2023, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The festival will be at Wingfield Park with musical entertainment and more. Admission is a $10 donation. Everyone is invited. Proceeds benefit the local LGBTQ+ community center. The parade is free to watch and starts at 10 a.m. It is centered at the ReTrac Plaza in downtown Reno. 23rd Annual Art Paws - Sunday, July 23, 2023, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art Paws is Artown's only event specially for pets (i.e., dogs) and their people. We will have activities, contests, local craft beer, food trucks, and everything else you need to spend a memorable day with your furry best friend. The event is free and will be held at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive in Reno. Hot August Nights Kickoff in Virginia City - Friday and Saturday, July 28 - 29, 2023. Celebrate Hot August Nights in this historic mining town just outside of Reno with cruising events, live entertainment, poker walk fun and more. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cruising will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Biggest Little City Wingfest - Friday and Saturday, July 28 - 29, 2023. Downtown Reno will host the 8th Annual Biggest Little City Wing Fest. More than 20,000 pounds of chicken wings will be slathered in sauce, smoked, fired and grilled to perfection. The competition will be fierce during two days of a sauce show down. This year's event will feature free live entertainment and a craft fair, camel rides, rock climbing, a water play zone and lots more. Along Virginia Street in downtown Reno. Summer Concerts from Reno Jazz Orchestra - Saturday, July 29, 2023, 7:30 p.m. The Reno Jazz Orchestra presents Hot House: One Night at the Savoy Ballroom. It's the swinging, jump-jiving stage show of the summer with the big band music of the nightclubbing in the 1930s at the world-famous Savoy Ballroom. At J Resort. This is a free Artown concert. This show repeats at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 7:30 p.m., but it's not free. Purchase tickets for the Sand Harbor performance. Family Health Festival - Saturday, July 29, 2023, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Free event with community and food resources for the whole family. Includes school vaccines, raffle for kids' bikes, dental screenings, energy assistance, childrens books and lots more. A collaborative service brought to you by Washoe County Health District and other organizations. At Hug High School, 3530 Sullivan Ln. in Sparks. Artown Closing Night - Monday, July 31, 2023, 7:30 p.m. The Soul Rebels started with an idea - to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz and rock all within a brass band context. The free show will be at Wingfield Park from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.
