February is... February happenings... Chinese New Year - The Year of the Tiger begins on February 1, 2022. This celebration is also known as the Chinese Spring Festival. "Sweet: A Tasty Journey" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - through May 15, 2022. An interactive exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. "Sweet: A Tasty Journey" will take you on a journey through the history and manufacturing of candy, chocolate, and other treats. The entry fee to Sweet is $10 for adults, $9 for children 3 to 17 and seniors. Kids under 3 are free. Hours at the Wilbur D. May Museum are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Free Classes about Gardening in Nevada - Bartley Ranch Series - Beginning on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 and continuing every Tuesday through March 29. Learn from experts about growing a vegetable garden and other plants in northern Nevada. At Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - General and Pediatrics Clinic - Saturday, February 1, 2022, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The General and Pediatrics Clinic provides services for adults including screenings and diagnosis, lab services, x-rays, EKGs, blood pressure monitoring, some treatments and referrals. Services for patients age 18 and younger include Head Start physicals, sick child visits, well child checks and nutrition counseling. Clinics are by appointment only. Groundhog Day - On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, or not. Depending on which way it goes, Phil's 100% accurate powers of prediction will indicate an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Cabin Fever for Kids Ages 4 to 10 - Thursdays, February 3 and 17, 2022, 10 a.m. The program for children to come to the garden and learn about how winter affects the world around them. At the Wilbur D. May Center in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. $3 donation per session requested. Parent attendance and masks required. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. These family-friendly shows provide welcome relief from the frosty weather during the depths of winter. The 2022 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Winter Hike Series from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, February 5, 2022, 9 a.m to 12 noon. Get outside this winter and explore some of Reno's local parks at your own pace. This walk will be at Reno's Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Free hot drinks and snacks will be served. Sign ups are encouraged but not required. Contact ashley@tmparksfoundation.org. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Geriatric and Dermatology Clinic - Saturday, February 5, 2022, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The Geriatric Clinic provides services and care to the elderly population. Free history presentations from Historic Reno Preservation Society - Tuesday, February 8, 2022, 5:30 p.m. "Saints, Sinners and Sovereign Citizens." John Smith discusses his new book about the grazing rights battle between Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and the federal government that resulted in a tense, armed standoff between Bundy's supporters and federal law enforcement officers. This is a virtual presentation via webinar. Washoe County Library Book Sale - February 12 - 20, 2022. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. This is your chance to get big bargains on books and other media while supporting your Washoe County Library System. Sale hours are every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preview day for Friends members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. "Social Science: The '90s" at The Discovery - Saturday, February 12, 2022, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Calling all noobs, dudes and dweebs for the phattest exploration of the science and culture of the ’90s. Visit the ’90s mini museum, dine at the cereal bar, make friendship bracelets, create popsicle people, go to battle in the Nerf® war room, and much more. For ages 21+. You can purchase tickets online or at the door (which is more expensive). Ticket price includes two drinks and complimentary tasty bites. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Women's Clinic - Saturday, February 12, 2022, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The Women's Clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, IUD placements, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. Clinics are held at the University Health Building at 745 W. Moana Lane in Reno. Second Saturdays at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, February 12, 2022. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. The theme for this Saturday is Play With Clay. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, February 12, 2022. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world. Admission is $12 per person. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Activities are designed for children 8 to 12 years old. Super Bowl LVI (56) Parties - Super Bowl Sunday 2022 is on Sunday, February 13. It will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. Rappers Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar will join R&B singer Mary J. Blige during the 2022 halftime show. Washoe County Park Ranger Walks - North Valleys Regional Park - Sunday, February 13, 2022, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Discover new trails and learn more about your local environment in various Washoe County parks and open space habitats. If this sounds like fun, preregister (required) and let's hit the trail. Bring a jacket, hiking boots, a snack, a bottle of water and your favorite camera. Valentine's Day Dining and Activities - Monday, February 14, 2022. There are romantic Valentine's Day dining opportunities available, along with other fun things to with your sweetheart. Baby Face Nelson in Nevada - Thursday, February 17, 2022, 12 noon to 1 p.m. This is a virtual event. Nevada Historical Society presents High Noon with Neal Cobb. The speaker is Nevada historian Dr. Michael Fischer. To my knowledge, he is the only most wanted criminal in America who lived in Nevada during the period when he was most wanted. Who and what brought him here and how many times was he in the state? The event is free, but you must register online to attend. February Junior Naturalists from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, February 19, 2022, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This month, we'll be at Pah Rah Mountain Park learning about remarkable raptors. We'll have a special guest: a live raptor from Animal Ark, plus other hands on activities. The program is free, but you must register to attend. Jimmy Beans Wool House-Warming Event - Saturday, February 19, 2022, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jimmy Beans Wool is hosting a house-warming event to officially welcome everyone to its brand new location on 891 Trademark Drive in Reno. The event will also be celebrating the launch of Reno Rafter 7, the company's first ever truly-local yarn created in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources (CABNR). There will be lots of activities throughout the day. President's Day - Monday, February 21, 2022. Schools, libraries and government offices will be closed. Ice Skating at the Grand Sierra Resort - season ends on Monday, February 28, 2022. Ice skating is also available at the Jennifer M. O'Neal Community Ice Arena is south Reno. North Lake Tahoe SNOWFEST! - February 25 - March 6, 2022. SNOWFEST is a ten day winter festival supporting local non profits, public programs, student organizations, and educational scholarships. Just a few of the events include the Tap Haus Block Party, SnowFest Fireworks, Polar Bear Swim, Tahoe City Dog Pull, Milk Jug Curling and Wine N Ice Competition.
