September is National Preparedness Month. Make sure you and your family are ready for any of the natural disasters that can occur in the Reno region, including wildfire, earthquakes, and flooding. Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off - Wednesday through Sunday, September 1 - 6, 2021. The Nugget Rib Cook-Off is really a cooking competition between the professional barbeque teams that will also be serving ribs and fixins to the public during the event. Admission to the Nugget Rib Cook-Off and parking are free. Held at Victorian Square in Sparks.

Labor Day Weekend - Friday through Monday, September 3 - 6, 2021. This weekend is the last big holiday weekend of the summer. There are plenty of things to do for your last summer fling, including train rides, hiking, picnicking, swimming and water play, visiting museums, the Nugget Rib Cook-Off, and more.

Burning Man 2021 - A Virtual Burning Man Experience will play out from August 22 through September 7, 2021. Tune in to enjoy Burning Man without the dust.

Galena Creek Visitor Center - Friday, September 3, 2021. After being COVID-closed for over a year, Galena Creek Visitor Center is reopening to public access. Check it out - this is a great place for families and kids.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 4, 2021. The Pack takes on the Cal Bears in a road game at UC Berkeley. Next is a home game a Mackay Stadium vs. Idaho State on September 11. Another road game follows against Kansas State on September 18.

Senior Fest 2021 - Canceled due to COVID and wildfire smoke.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, September 9, 2021. A lecture by Doug Smith, ecology, evolution and conservation biology program alumnus from UNR and Yellowstone Wolf Restoration Project lead. It's free to attend, but you must register for this online lecture, which starts at 7 p.m. Lectures are free and open to the public. Lecture will be virtual instead of live. Check the "Discover Science" website for details.

40th Great Reno Balloon Race - Friday through Sunday, September 10 - 12, 2021. You have to get up real early, but it's worth it to enjoy the colorful spectacle of the world's largest free hot air balloon event. It is held annually at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

62nd Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races - Friday through Sunday, September 10 - 12, 2021. Bring the family to Virginia City to enjoy this hilarious event, a tradition that dates back to the 50s. Friday is Hot Camel Nights starting at 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 10 a.m. and races start at 12 noon each day, plus there are lots of other activities around town during the weekend. No umbrellas or pets allowed.

Reno Greek Festival - Friday and Saturday, September 10 - 11, 2021. The in-person festival has been replaced by Greek Food TO GO. Place your food order online (by Sept. 6, 2021), select a day and time to pick up your order, then go get your food and enjoy. If you need assistance with ordering, call (775) 825-5365.

Library Book Sale - September 11 - 19, 2021. Library book sales are in the mall space next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. Preview day for Friends of Washoe County Library members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. The sale is open to all every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Music in the Garden: Picnic at the Piano - Saturday, September 11, 2021, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring a picnic for an evening of piano playing under the trees in Kleiner Oak Grove. Listen to talented pianists Jeff DePaoli and Gordon and Nolan Hopkins, who will be playing classical pop selections and a few duets in between. Free admission. At the May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue - Sunday, September 12, 2021. Experience the adventure of riding your bicycle around Lake Tahoe's 72-mile shoreline by participating in the 18th Annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue. Cyclists enjoy great food and participant support stations. You can register online for this event.

National Championship Air Races and Air Show - Wednesday through Sunday, September 15 - 19, 2021. The world's fastest motor sport also features extensive static displays along with spectacular military and civilian aerial entertainment. This year, the USAF Thunderbirds will be the headline performer. This is the only pylon air racing event of its kind in the world.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, September 11, 2021. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. The theme is different each Second Saturday and is sometimes related to one of the current exhibits. Enjoy free admission and activities at the Museum. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, September 11, 2021. Join in on adventures that are out of this world. Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the National Automobile Museum. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information.

UNR Extended Studies Open House - Thursday, September 16, 2021, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Learn more about Extended Studies' professional development short courses and certificate programs, meet instructors and receive discounts for registering on-site for select courses. Enter for a chance to win prizes, including concert tickets and certificates good toward course fees. Join us after the Open House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. outside of the MacLean Observatory for a special concert by Sofar Sounds Reno. 3rd Thursday in Downtown Sparks - Thursday, September 16, 2021, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Sparks Museum and Cultural Center, 39 North Downtown, and Sierra Arts Foundation, along with the City of Sparks, have created a downtown experience with art surrounding the Sparks Arts Walk: music, poetry reading, performances, art tours with food and kids activities. Every month, we invite you to come downtown to enjoy the museum, train and historical schoolhouse. Every month brings new items to explore.

Nevada Humane Society Duck Race and Festival - Saturday, September 18, 2021, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. For 2021, the Duck Race & Festival will be hosted at Hawkins Amphitheatre in Bartley Ranch Regional Park. There will be vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, games for the kids, pet adoptions, and more. To close out the evening we will be airing our virtual duck race and a family friendly-movie. You can still buy ducks through the Duck Race website as usual. There will be lots of prizes, including $10,000 or a new car donated by Carson City Toyota.

Smithsonian Museum Day - Saturday, September 18, 2021. Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry for up to two people presenting a Museum Day ticket and the Wilbur D. May Museum is a participating institution. Others in northern Nevada include the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, National Automobile Museum and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. Tickets for each of these are available online.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, September 18, 2021, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Fall into the Holidays Craft Fair - Saturday, September 18, 2021, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Vendors will feature photography, glass art, mosaics, metal art, woodwork, kitchen items, yard flags, clothing, jewelry, books and much more. Entry into the event is free. Proceeds will benefit the City of Sparks Arts Fund and Sparks Parks and Recreation Leisure Without Limits programs for people with disabilities. At the Parks and Recreation Gym, 98 Richards Way in Sparks.

Guided Hikes at Galena Creek Visitor Center - Saturday, September 18, 2021, 10 a.m. Our guided hikes are a great way to stay active while learning about the local area. Bring water, sunscreen, hiking boots, and a hungry brain. Email at visitorcenter@gbininstitute.org to reserve a spot. At Galena Creek Visitor Center, 18250 Mt. Rose Highway (Nevada 431) in south Reno.

Sleeping Beauty at The Pioneer Center - Saturday and Sunday, September 18 - 19, 2021. The 2021 fall gala season for the A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic Sleeping Beauty. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet.

Fiesta on Wells - Sunday, September 19, 2021, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fiesta on Wells is a traditional celebration of Latinx heritage. There will be entertainment, food, music, folklore, ballets and lots of vendor booths. The party will be at the south end of Wells Avenue in Reno.

Music in the Garden: Symphony Under the Trees - Friday, September 24, 2021, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bring a picnic for an evening with the University of Nevada Reno Symphony Orchestra under the trees in Kleiner Oak Grove. Reed Chamberlin brings the Wind Symphony to you for this very special appearance. A Wind Symphony is a musical performance group made up of instruments from the woodwind, brass, and percussion families of musical instruments. They will be playing classical and pop selections and maybe a few show tunes. Free admission. At the May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Street Vibrations Fall Rally - Thursday through Sunday, September 23 - 26, 2021. Over 50,000 riders converge for the Fall Rally and there are even more events and things to do, including Tattoo Expo, hundreds of vendors, factory rigs selling everything motorcycle, stunt shows, rides to Lake Tahoe, and biker drinking places. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Truckee River Cleanup Day - Saturday, September 25, 2021. Cleanup and beautification projects span from Verdi to Lockwood. Projects include storm-drain stenciling, litter pickup, graffiti removal, in-the-river trash removal, weed pulling and park beautification projects. The main sponsor is Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). To register, visit the KTMB volunteer signup page.

National Public Lands Day - Saturday, September 25, 2021. Enjoy an entrance fee free day at hundreds of units of our National Parks system and other public lands administered by agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. You can also volunteer and help with public lands projects across the country. Locally, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock will be hosting service projects.

Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire - Saturday and Sunday, September 25 - 26, 2021. This event carries on a tradition started in 1919. There will be over 300 exhibitors, music and entertainment, and 3,000 pounds of homemade candy. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets required for the Candy Dance and Dinner. (775) 782-8696.

Dozers & Dirt - Saturday, September 25, 2021, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us and get dirty digging-in your shovels to support local children battling cancer. We invite big and little kids alike to operate more than 35 pieces of heavy construction equipment, experience up-close displays of the RAVEN helicopter, a bomb unit, police cars, fire trucks, and more. Lunch and a day of fun is included. All proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. Tickets available online. Event is at the Rilite Aggregate Pit, 9208 Western Skies Drive in south Reno.

Pool Pawty 2021 - Sunday, September 26, 2021, 1:45 p.m. Bring your canine friends and have fun in the water at Idlewild Pool. Friendly dogs are welcome to swim, play Frisbee and catch. $15 per dog (limit 2 dogs per handler). Tickets are limited and available online. Physical proof of rabies vaccination REQUIRED at the event. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Canine Companions.

Banned Books Week - Sunday through Saturday, September 26 - October 2, 2021. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship and the benefits of unrestricted reading. Celebrated by the Washoe County Library System.

Offbeat Music Festival - September 30 - October 2, 2021. It's a citywide, multi-venue festival that's all about discovering the amazing things being created right here in Reno – music, food, art and more. Discover new music from a choice of 60+ performances over 3 days at different locations around the core of Reno. Tickets are available online.
