September is National Preparedness Month. Make sure you and your family are ready for any of the natural disasters that can occur in the Reno region, including wildfire, earthquakes, and flooding. Big events during September, 2018 include...

Burning Man - Sunday, August 26 through Monday, September 3, 2018. Burning Man 2018 takes place in the Black Rock Desert north of Reno. The 2018 art theme in Black Rock City is "I, Robot."

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off - Wednesday through Monday, August 29 through September 3, 2018. Come to Victorian Square in Sparks for family fun and entertainment at America's biggest and best free rib festival.

Labor Day Weekend - Friday through Monday, August 31 - September 3, 2018. This weekend is the last big holiday weekend of the summer. There are plenty of things to do for your last summer fling, including steam train rides, hiking, picnicking, swimming and water play, visiting museums, the Nugget Rib Cook-Off, and more.

32nd Annual Numaga Indian Days Pow Wow - Friday through Sunday, August 31 to September 2, 2018. This free, family-friendly annual event is held over Labor Day weekend and features some of the best Native American dancers, singers and drummers in the country. Besides the memorable pow wow entertainment, over 25 vendors sell traditional native foods and handcrafted silver work, bead work, baskets and other American Indian art. The event is at Hungry Valley, 266 Loop Road in Sparks. Hungry Valley is 19 miles north of downtown Reno in scenic Eagle Canyon.

Guided Walking Tours with Historic Reno Preservation Society - Saturday, September 1, 2018, 10 a.m. Learn about Reno's history on this "Bricks and Stones" guided walk. Another walk in September is on the 8th. There will be a bike tour through old Reno on Sunday, September 9.

Senior Fest 2018 - Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Held at the Reno Town Mall, Senior Fest provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with senior service providers and businesses. Over 50 businesses and agencies will be on hand offering a wide range of resources for seniors, boomers, and retirees. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The Reno Town Mall is at the corner of S. Virginia Street and Peckham Lane, across from the Atlantis Hotel Casino.

Great Reno Balloon Race - Friday through Sunday, September 7 - 9, 2018. You have to get up real early, but it's worth it to enjoy the colorful spectacle of the world's largest free hot air balloon event. It is held annually at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

59th Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races - Friday through Sunday, September 7 - 9, 2018. Bring the family to Virginia City to enjoy this hilarious event, a tradition that dates back over 50 years. Gates open at 10 a.m. and races start at 12 noon each day, plus there are lots of other activities around town during the weekend. No umbrellas or pets allowed.

Reno Running Fest - Saturday and Sunday, September 8 - 9, 2018. Race178 is combining the 50th annual Journal Jog, the 6th annual Reno 10 Miler & Relay and the inaugural Reno Mile, for a weekend of racing, fitness and fun called Reno Running Fest. Visit the website for all the details and to register online.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, September 8, 2018. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. The theme is different each Second Saturday and is sometimes related to one of the current exhibits. Enjoy free admission and activities at the Museum. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, September 8, 2018. Join in on the adventures that are out of this world, with "Flying on Mars." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the National Automobile Museum. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information.

Nevada Field Day - Saturday, September 8, 2018, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors to this free event will enjoy hands-on activities and information focusing on the latest advancements in agriculture, horticulture, nutrition, natural resources and the environment. Learn about fall planting and pruning, as well vegetable gardening and other topics for home gardeners. The Desert Farming Initiation will be holding a Farmers Market, selling local produce. Plants grown in the University’s greenhouses will also be for sale to support future research and graduate student work. The event will be at the University of Nevada, Reno's Main Station Field Lab, 5895 Clean Water Way in Reno, near the intersection of McCarran Boulevard and Mill Street.

Library Book Sale - Saturday through Sunday, September 8 - 16, 2018. Read Again Bookstore, a function of Friends of Washoe County Library, holds several book sales during the year. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. A day for Friends members only is on Friday, September 7, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join at the door. All other days are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Oleanna" by Reno Little Theater - September 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 7:30 p.m., and September 8, 9, 16, 23 at 2 p.m. The play is a two-character battle of the sexes. Tickets are general $25, senior / military $20, student $15. Reno Little Theater is at 147 E. Pueblo Street. (775) 813-8900.

National Drive Electric Week Event - Sunday, September 9, 2018, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reno is hosting the largest gathering of electric vehicles and enthusiasts in Nevada at Virginia Lake Park Pavilion. The event is free to the public. There will be lots of vendors and electric vehicles on display. Virginia Lake Park is at 1980 Lakeside Drive in Reno.

Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue - Sunday, September 9, 2018. Experience the adventure of riding your bicycle around Lake Tahoe's 72-mile shoreline by participating in the 14th Annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue. Cyclists enjoy great food and participant support stations. You can register online for this event.

Grow Your Own, Nevada! - Tuesday, September 11, 2018. Beginners and veteran gardeners can learn both basic and advanced techniques with some help from "Grow Your Own, Nevada!" gardening classes. There is a series of 4 classes on Tuesday evenings (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) through October 2, presented by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE). It's $15 per class or $30 for all four.

Reno Air Races - Wednesday through Sunday, September 12 - 16, 2018. The world's fastest motor sport also features extensive static displays along with spectacular military and civilian aerial entertainment. This year, the Patriots Jet Team will be the headline performer. This is the last pylon air racing event of its kind in the world.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, September 15, 2018. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 15, 2018. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team tackles Oregon State at a home game in Mackay Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Go Pack!

Bowling for Rhinos - Saturday, September 15, 2018. This event is an opportunity for the general public to have access to and enjoy the National Bowling Stadium while contributing to a great conservation effort by the National Association of Zoo Keepers. Many local businesses and organizations are sponsors as well. Tickets are available online through the website. All proceeds go to rhino and cheetah conservation.

Edible Pedal 100 - Sunday, September 16, 2018. Organized bike ride with courses around Washoe Valley, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe, depending on which ride you choose - 10 miles, 32 miles, 54 miles, 74 miles and 150K. The start/finish is at Bowers Mansion Regional Park in Washoe Valley. Edible Pedal 100 is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise.

Grow Your Own, Nevada! - September 11, 18, 25, and October 2, 2018. Grow Your Own, Nevada! is for homeowners and other small scale growers. It concentrates on imparting basic horticultural information and also provides information about new and alternative growing methods. Classes are in Reno and are $15 each or $30 for all 4 in the series. Sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE). On Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, September 20, 2018, 7 p.m. Come with noted astronomer, planetary scientist, and interplanetary travel guide Professor Jim Bell on a tour of what the solar system has to offer as of 2018. Lectures are free and open to the public. They are held in the Redfield Auditorium in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

A Very Potter Crawl - Saturday, September 22, 2018, 8 p.m. First annual crawl celebrating the world of wizardry. There are 15+ different participating downtown bars, nightclubs and restaurants all in walking distance. With Specially-themed live entertainment, gogo dancers and DJs. Single cups are $5 and you can get a magic wand for $10. If you like this sort of thing, there are lots of other Reno beer crawls throughout the year.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 22, 2018. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team plays the University of Toledo at an away game in Toledo, OH. Kickoff is time is TBA. Go Pack!

Reno Fiesta - Saturday, September 22, 2018, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The City of Reno will host the second annual Fiesta, a free community event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the cultural diversity that makes Reno such a wonderful place to live. The event will be at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. The headliner will be Changüí Majadero, a five-piece Cuban band out of L.A.

Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, September 22, 2018. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

National Public Lands Day - Saturday, September 22, 2018. Enjoy an entrance fee free day at hundreds of units of our National Parks system and other public lands administered by agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. You can also volunteer and help with public lands projects across the country. Locally, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock will be hosting service projects.

"Cinderella" at the Pioneer Center - Saturday and Sunday, September 22 - 23, 2018. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the score to this wonderful ballet, danced by A.V.A. Ballet Theatre. Cinderella is the captivating story of the hopes of a lowly maid, the love of a prince, and the magic of a simple wand. This classic fairytale is filled with dance, romance, and comedy and is fun for the entire family. The Saturday performance will be at 8 p.m. and the Sunday performance will be at 2 p.m. For tickets call, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts at 1-800-553-6605 or visit the website for tickets online. Story Stroll at Davis Creek Regional Park - September 22, 29, and October 6, 2018, 11 a.m. You can also do a self-led stroll during park hours from September 22 through October 6, 2018. Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, in partnership with the Washoe County Library System and the Washoe County School District, is offering their second Story Stroll to promote reading, engage elementary students, highlight our local parks, and engage our community. The Fall Story Stroll will take place along the .7 mile loop Nature Trail, encircling the pond at Davis Creek Regional Park. Strolling is free and open to the community.

ART & Nature at the Arboretum - Sunday, September 23, 2018, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join us for a beautiful September day in the arboretum, as we celebrate the union of ART & Nature. Experience the creative process at work while you meander through the gardens observing and speaking with artists at work. Free admission. At the May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Fiesta on Wells - Sunday, September 23, 2018. Come to Reno's Wells Avenue for this Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The event will feature free entertainment, arts, culture and resources for the community.

Last Friday in Downtown Sparks - Friday, September 28, 2018, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The City of Sparks has teamed up with the Sparks Museum and Cultural Center for a special event the last Friday of the month through September. Visitors can experience the museum, tour the train and Glendale Schoolhouse for free, enjoy art on display in the Cultural Center and outside on the sidewalks. Local bands at the amphitheater and Great Basin Stage. Stay late for a free movie in the amphitheater - "Up."

Water Lantern Festival - Saturday, September 29, 2018. This is a family friendly event that can be shared by everyone. Friends, families, neighbors, and lots of people that you haven't met can come together to create a peaceful, memorable experience. At Sparks Marina Park, 300 Howard Dr., 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Nevadafest - A Celebration of Nevada Craft Beer - Saturday, September 29, 2018, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (VIP hour 12 noon to 1 p.m.). Come enjoy an afternoon filled with craft beer, food trucks, live music, and a variety of outdoor games. The event will be at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno and benefits the Nevada Craft Brewers Association. Tickets are available online.

Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire - Saturday and Sunday, September 29 - 30, 2018. This event carries on a tradition started in 1919. There will be over 300 exhibitors, music and entertainment, and 3,000 pounds of homemade candy. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets required for the Candy Dance and Dinner. (775) 782-8696.

DogFest Walk n' Roll Reno - Saturday, September 29, 2018, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Furry friends and families are invited to join us for a day of fun, festivities, graduate speakers, dog demonstrations, music, food, an accessible 1/2 mile stroll and more. Registration is free. The event is at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center / Dick Taylor Park, 1301 Valley Road in Reno. This is a benefit for Canine Companions for Independence.

Fall Harvest Festival by Nevada Youth Empowerment Project - Saturday, September 29, 2018, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come to Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno for this family fun festival, featuring hay rides, martial arts demonstrations, gold panning, pony rides, carnival games, entertainment, bounce houses, face painting, cake walk and baby animals. Free entry with tickets sold for the various attractions. Benefit for Nevada Youth Empowerment Project.

Wags & Whiskers Gala - An Evening in Morocco - Saturday, September 29, 2018, starting at 6 p.m. This is a fundraiser for Nevada Humane Society to save homeless pets. The night will transport your senses to exotic Morocco. Sip on signature cocktails while participating in exciting auctions and unique tea experiences. Breathtaking performances and Moroccan inspired fare will lend to encompassing delights. The event will be at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno.

Lakefront Property on Mars and the Summer Triangle - Saturday, September 29, 2018, 7 p.m. Join Mike Hopper and Jim Fahey from the Astronomical Society of Nevada and get a closer look at the Mars exploration, plus last looks at the stars, constellations, and deep sky objects of the Summer Triangle. We will begin with an informational presentation inside the Galena Creek Visitor Center, and end with a star viewing outside. Open to the public. Suggested donation of $5 per person.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 29, 2018. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team plays the Air Force Academy at a conference away game in Colorado Springs, CO. Kickoff time is 1 p.m. Go Pack!

Fee-free Day at Nevada State Parks - Saturday, September 29, 2018. Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day with a "fee-free" day at Nevada's state parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping (Saturday night) and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada. This is also an opportunity for visitors to take the passport challenge and add a stamp to their passport booklet, or if they don't have one yet, to pick one up while visiting any state park. Once visitors have their passports stamped at 15 different parks, they earn a free annual day-use pass to all Nevada State Parks.

Fall Celebration at Galena Creek Regional Park - Sunday, September 30, 2018, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and join us for a splendid Sunday afternoon in the Galena Regional Park with fun-filled activities the whole family will enjoy. Start the day with a birding hike at 7 a.m., then stick around for a mountain bike ride, fly fishing clinic, disc golf, pumpkin painting, fundraiser lunch, and lots more. Events come with a suggested donation of $5. Galena Creek Visitor Center is at 18250 Mt. Rose Highway (Nevada 431).

Street Vibrations Fall Rally - Wednesday through Sunday, September 26 - 30, 2018. Over 50,000 riders converge for the Fall Rally and there are even more events and things to do, including America's Finest Custom Bike Builder's Expo, Tattoo Expo, more than 300 vendors, factory rigs selling everything motorcycle, stunt shows, rides to Lake Tahoe, and biker drinking places. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
