September is National Preparedness Month. Make sure you and your family are ready for any of the natural disasters that can occur in the Reno region, including wildfire, earthquakes, and flooding. Get more information from "Be Prepared for Natural Disaster." Big events during September, 2016 include... Burning Man - Sunday, August 28 through Monday, September 5, 2016. Burning Man 2016 takes place in the Black Rock Desert north of Reno. The 2016 art theme in Black Rock City will be "Da Vinci's Workshop." Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off - Wednesday through Monday, August 31 - September 5, 2016. Come to Victorian Square in Sparks for family fun and entertainment at America's biggest and best free rib festival. Wolf Pack Football - Friday, September 2, 2016. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team opens its 2016 season with a home game at Mackay Stadium against the Cal Poly Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Go Pack! Labor Day Weekend - Saturday through Monday, September 3 - 5, 2016. This three day weekend is the last big holiday weekend of the summer. There are plenty of things to do for your last summer fling, including steam train rides, hiking, picnicking, swimming and water play, visiting museums, the Nugget Rib Cook-Off, and more. Senior Fest 2016 - Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Held at the Reno Town Mall, Senior Fest provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with senior service providers and businesses. Over 50 businesses and agencies will be on hand offering a wide range of resources for seniors, boomers, and retirees. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The Reno Town Mall is at the corner of S. Virginia Street and Peckham Lane, across from the Atlantis Hotel Casino. 35th Anniversary Great Reno Balloon Race - Friday through Sunday, September 9 - 11, 2016. You have to get up real early, but it's worth it to enjoy the colorful spectacle of the world's largest free hot air balloon event. It is held annually at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. 57th Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races - Friday through Sunday, September 9 - 11, 2016. Bring the family to Virginia City to enjoy this hilarious event, a tradition that dates back over 50 years. Gates open at 10 a.m. and races start at 12 noon each day, plus there are lots of other activities around town during the weekend. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, September 10, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. The theme is different each Second Saturday and is sometimes related to one of the current exhibits. Enjoy free admission and activities at the Museum. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, September 10, 2016. Join in on the adventures that are out of this world, with "Training Astromauts for Space Missions." Practice exploring space in full-size cockpits, use high-tech simulations, and see a 3D journey to space show. Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the National Automobile Museum. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information. Tractors & Truffles - Saturday, September 10, 2016. Centered at Oats Park Art Center in Fallon, NV, this full-day event will include farm tours, wine tasting, gourmet dining, and a live music performance by Leftover Cuties. Gourmet chefs prepare the dinner. $125 per person. For more information and to register, call (775) 423-4556. Washoe County Library Booksale - Friday through Sunday, September 10 - 18, 2016. Read Again Bookstore, a function of Friends of Washoe County Library, holds several book sales during the year. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. Preview day for Friends members is on the first Friday of each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. The sale is open to all every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue - Sunday, September 11, 2016. Experience the adventure of riding your bicycle around Lake Tahoe's 72-mile shoreline by participating in the 13th Annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue. Cyclists enjoy great food and participant support stations. You can register online for this event. Proceeds support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Historic Downtown Truckee Arts and Crafts Festival - Saturday and Sunday, September 10 - 11, 2016. This free event brings together a group of artists showcasing an assortment of collectable arts and crafts in a variety of media including paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, photography and much more. It will be on Spring Street and the sidewalks of Donner Pass Road, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Reno Air Races - Wednesday through Sunday, September 14 - 18, 2016. The world's fastest motor sport also features extensive static displays along with spectacular military and civilian aerial entertainment. This year, the Blue Angels will be there with their amazing flight demonstration team. This is the last pylon air racing event of its kind in the world. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, September 17, 2016. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Pokemon Go Crawl - Saturday, September 17, 2016. This different type of event will work at incorporating all of the elements of the game into a bar crawl. Get details from the website since this will not be like other crawls in Reno. Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 17, 2016. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team tackles the Buffalo Bills at a home game in Mackay Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Go Pack! Edible Pedal 100 - Sunday, September 18, 2016. Organized bike ride with courses around Washoe Valley, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe, depending on which ride you choose - 10 mile, 50 mile, and the Nevada 150K. The start/finish is at Bowers Mansion Regional Park in Washoe Valley. Edible Pedal 100 is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise. Street Vibrations Fall Rally - Wednesday through Sunday, September 21 - 25, 2016. Over 50,000 riders converge for the Fall Rally and there are even more events and things to do, including America's Finest Custom Bike Builder's Expo, Tattoo Expo, more than 300 vendors, factory rigs selling everything motorcycle, stunt shows, rides to Lake Tahoe, and biker drinking places. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Association. National Public Lands Day - Saturday, September 24, 2016. Enjoy an entrance fee free day at hundreds of units of our National Parks system and other public lands administered by agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. You can also volunteer and help with public lands projects across the country. Locally, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock will be hosting service projects. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, September 24, 2016. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire - Saturday and Sunday, September 24 - 25, 2016. This event carries on a tradition started in 1919. There will be over 300 exhibitors, music and entertainment, and 3,000 pounds of homemade candy. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets required for the Candy Dance and Dinner. (775) 782-8696. Truckee River Cleanup Day - Saturday, September 24, 2016. Volunteer with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) to help clean up the Truckee River corridor through Reno and Sparks. The cleanup includes projects such as storm-drain stenciling, litter pickup, graffiti removal, in-the-river trash removal (by kayakers and flyfishers), weed pulling and park projects. A volunteer appreciation picnic follows. Sign up online and choose where on the river you would like to work. Galena Fest - Sunday, September 25, 2016. The 8th annual Galena Fest will be at Galena Creek Visitor Center and Recreation Area. Those seeking competition can enter the Bloody Rose Mountain Bike Climb or the Wicked Thorn Trail Run. There will also be family friendly things to do like a nature walk, children's activities, and environmental and cultural displays. There will be live music by Escalade, a kids' run, and food vendors. The Fest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Party in the Garden - Sunday, September 25, 2016. This "Diamond Garden Party" is the May Arboretum Society’s annual benefit at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Mingle in the gardens amongst the trees and flowers with friends; enjoy some bites from local food eateries and taste microbrews, wines and even different varieties of coffee. Tickets are $30 for May Arboretum Society members and $40 for the general public through September 6. After that, ticket prices increase. All proceeds benefit the May Arboretum Society. Tickets are limited and may be purchased online starting July 24. Washoe County Sheriff's Office Community Open House - Thursday, September 29, 2016. Washoe County residents and their families are invited to join Sheriff Chuck Allen, and the men and women of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, for an insider's look at how the office operates during a Community Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Open House gives residents the opportunity to see the Sheriff's Office resources that help keep the community safe and to meet some of the many people who are entrusted to carry out the Sheriff's commitment to our community. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - Wednesdays, September 14 and 28, 2016, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel.
