October is Disability Awareness Month. Learn more from "City of Reno Inclusion and Adaptive Programs." It is also the continuation of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15, 2020).

Big events during October, 2020 include...

TeenTober at the Washoe County Library - month of October, 2020. TeenTober is a new, annual, nationwide celebration hosted by libraries through the month of October that aims to celebrate teens and promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills and fuel their passions in and outside the library. See the calendar of events for all the upcoming TeenTober happenings.

"Out of the Silence" concert from the Reno Philharmonic - Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, 2020. The Reno Philharmonic is returning to the stage, but only with a livestream concert. The concert includes three parts. Tickets are available online and valid for only one viewing device. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 3 and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 4.

Art at the Ark - Saturday, October 3, 2020, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Animal Ark is happy to announce we will be hosting our new Art at the Ark fundraising event. This event will be the first of its kind, featuring local artisans selling their artwork stationed throughout the park, music, a special live painting, and a silent auction. $20 adults, $18 seniors, and $16 for children. Reservations not required. Animal Ark is at 1265 Deerlodge Road, off of Red Rock Road in the Stead area of Reno. (775) 970-3111.

PumpkinPalooza presents Halloween Reimagined - The Purple Pumpkin Pursuit - October, 2020. This is a quest to find hidden Purple Pumpkins around the Reno / Sparks area rather than the big celebration in Sparks. Every registered family will receive a PumpkinPalooza Gram which includes the hunt sheet, candy, and other Halloween goodies. Go to the PumpkinPalooza website for more details and to get your tickets online. This is great family fun for Halloween.

Fall Break at Washoe County Schools - Monday through Friday, October 5 - 9, 2020. Fall break activities for children and families around Reno and Sparks include camps and other things to do from several area organizations.

ALSOS - The Hunt for Hitler's A-Bomb - Tuesday, October 6, 2020, 5:30 p.m. In 1943, as part of the Manhattan Project, a clandestine group of scientists and military personnel, ALSOS, are tasked with finding and capturing German nuclear scientists and their labs before Hitler can change the outcome of the war. Unforgettable and unlikely characters, poignant moments, suspense and even comedy characterize this piece of history. And a special twist: the Reno connection? This is a virtual presentation via Zoom by the Historic Reno Preservation Society (HRPS). Link is available on the Washoe County Library website. Presented by Jerry Wagner, retired from managing environmental programs.

UNR Ski Swap - Friday through Sunday, October 9 - 11, 2020. The UNR Ski Swap is back with a huge selection of new and used equipment. Everything from boards to boots, skis to snow shoes, clothing, helmets, gloves and more. You can also sell up to 10 items of your used gear (with certain exclusions). Admission is free; go to the north entrance of the Reno Sparks Convention Center across from the Atlantis Casino. Parking on Friday is free. Hours are Friday 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Masks Required. Social Distancing Requirements will be in effect and items will be displayed in a social distancing manner.

8th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival - Saturday, October 10, 2020, 7 p.m. The festivities will be online via Livestream to adhere to social distancing measures. There will be some exciting new features to share with you. We will also have raffle prizes and giveaways all night. The virtual lobby will open at 6:30 pm and films will begin promptly at 7 p.m. The program is full of thought-provoking, funny, entertaining, and informative films centered around the environment, wildlife, and the human spirit. Brought to you by Friends of Nevada Wilderness. Tickets are available online.

Reno 1868 FC Soccer - October 10, 2020, 6 p.m. Reno takes on LA Galaxy II in a first round playoff game at Greater Nevada Field. Check with the Reno 1868 FC website to see whether or not fans will be allowed to attend in person.

Lake Tahoe Marathon - Postponed until October 8 - 10, 2021.

Eldorado Great Italian Festival - Saturday and Sunday, October 10 - 11, 2020. Canceled.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, October 10, 2020. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of free admission for all. Art activities are temporarily on hold due to virus concerns. However, there are online activities available at "Hands ON! at Home." Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Science Saturday at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, October 10, 2020, 9:30 a.m. Join us for out of this world adventure. Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the National Automobile Museum. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information.

Harvest Festival at Animal Ark - Saturday and Sunday, October 10 - 11, 2020. As part of our behavioral enrichment program, some of the animals will receive pumpkins filled with their favorite treats. Watch the enjoyment experienced by our predators when presented with these unique and delicious treats. Throughout each session, pumpkins will be delivered to different animals. Be sure to bring the camera for animal viewing at its finest. Adults $20; Seniors $19; Children $16. There will be a morning and afternoon session each day. Reservations required. Fall Bulb Festival at the May Arboretum - Saturday, October 10, 2020, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us in Saint Patrick's Grove and enjoy the change of seasons, while getting a jump-start on your spring blooming gardens. Choose from daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinth, muscari, and more. Amaryllis to celebrate the holidays will also be available. Local artisans will be on-site offering honey, jams and jellies, cookies and cakes, essential oils, jewelry, handmade porcelain and pottery, skincare products, fused glass and wearable art, planters, mixed-media garden art, fiber art, and more. COVID-19 precautions observed. The May Arboretum is in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

Free Flu Vaccine Clinic at The Discovery - Tuesday, October 13, 2020, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Flu vaccines will be available at low or no-cost for children and adults who qualify. Flu vaccines will be administered by Washoe County Health District and Walmart on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. Visit booking.appointy.com/immunizenevada to make your reservation. You can also schedule an appointment by calling Immunize Nevada at 775-624-7117. All children who get a flu shot, and one adult per family, will be given a voucher for free admission to the museum to be used on a later date. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the clinic date. Masks must be worn at all times. If you have health insurance, including Nevada Checkup and Medicaid, please bring your insurance card. The Discovery Museum is at 490 S. Center Street in Reno.

2019 Great Nevada ShakeOut - Thursday, October 15, 2020. Nevada lies within one of the most seismically active regions in the United States. Along with California and Alaska, Nevada ranks in the top three states subject to the most large-scale earthquakes during the last 150 years. The Great Nevada ShakeOut is a simple, coordinated "drop, cover and hold on" exercise. Last year, more than 590,000 Nevadans participated. To register as an individual, business, school or government agency or organization, go to the official website. All Nevada residents are encouraged to register and participate.

Early Voting for General Election 2020 - October 17 - 30, 2020. Registered voters may cast their ballot at any early voting location during this time frame. There is also a set of locations where voters may drop off their mail in ballots during this time.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, October 22, 2020. In her lecture, Beth Leger will describe the UNR Museum of Natural History, its waxing and waning in favor over time, current efforts to protect, preserve, and share these precious items, as well as present examples of how scientists are using collections to answer some of the biggest questions of our time. Lectures are free and open to the public. Lecture will be virtual instead of live. Check the "Discover Science" website for details.

Nevada Football Moms to host "Howl-O-Ween" Virtual 5K - October 23 - 25, 2020. Wolf Pack fans everywhere will have the opportunity to participate in the 5K. The event benefits the Wolf Pack's "Eat To Win" Nutrition Program, which supplements the football team's nutrition efforts for the student-athletes. The entry fee is $40 per racer and each registration includes an exclusive Nevada Football beanie as well as a Nevada Football sticker. Participants will complete the 5K at your own convenience and do so anywhere you would like. You can register online.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, October 24, 2020, kickoff 4 p.m. The Pack is back with a shorter season of games against conference teams only. This game at Mackay Stadium is against the Wyoming Cowboys. Fans will not be allowed in the stadium for this game.

"Dirty Cello" at Ferrari Farms - Sunday, October 25, 2020, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come enjoy some live music. Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues and bluegrass. From down home blues with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin' bluegrass, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping. Tickets $15 per person, children 12 and under, $10. Ferrari Farms is at 4701 Mill Street in Reno. While there, you can also enjoy the Ferrari Farms Fall Festival.

Halloween - Saturday, October 31, 2020. Haunted houses, trick-or-treating, pumpkin patches, and much more. The Reno area does Halloween in a big way and there are plenty of activities for everyone in the family, including a few for adults only. Check the listings to see what is actually happening and what is canceled.

Nevada Day Celebration in Carson City - Saturday, October 31, 2020. Nevada Day will be celebrated this year, but with some changes. The big parade down Main Street won't take place, but other events will. Organizers are working to still have the single jack rock drilling contest, hot air balloon launch, beard contest and golf tournament.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, October 31, 2020, kickoff 7:30 p.m. The Pack is back with a shorter season of just games against conference teams. This traditional game is against UNLV for the Fremont Cannon. It will be played down in Las Vegas. Check the official Wolf Pack website to see whether or not fans will be allowed in the stadium.
