Big events during October, 2017 include...

Fall Break at Washoe County Schools - Monday through Friday, October 2 - 6, 2017. Fall break activities for children and families around Reno and Sparks include camps and other things to do from several area organizations.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, October 7, 2017. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team takes on the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors in a conference game at Mackay Stadium. Kick-off time is 7:30 p.m. Go Pack!

Reno Celtic Celebration - Saturday and Sunday, October 7 - 8, 2017. The Reno Celtic Celebration at Bartley Ranch Regional Park features activities and events that originated mostly in Scotland and Ireland, such as highland athletic events, spirited music, and graceful, energetic forms of dance. This great family event has food and drink vendors and parking is free. Tickets are $15 or $25 for both days. Kids 12 and under are free with a paid admission.

Fall Fish Festival - Saturday and Sunday, October 7 - 8, 2017. Bring the family to this free annual event celebrating a variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and surrounding streams. It is held every October at Taylor Creek Visitor Center on the south end of Lake Tahoe. The Fall Fish Festival includes lots of activities to help children and parents learn about the Lake Tahoe environment and have fun doing it. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

World Championship Outhouse Races in Virginia City - Saturday and Sunday, October 7 - 8, 2017. The Races pit teams of costumed outhouse racers against each other. One person rides and the remaining team members push, pull or drag the decorated outhouses down the racetrack, which is C Street in Virginia City. This event is free to the public and is quite the spectacle. To participate, get a 3 person team together and register online. Registration closes on September 30, 2017.

Eldorado Great Italian Festival - Saturday and Sunday, October 7 - 8, 2017. It's free to attend the Great Italian Festival, when downtown Reno becomes Little Italy. This is a fun, family-friendly festival, with street performers, free music from two stages, plenty of good food and drink, and lots more. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Alpine Aspen Festival - Saturday and Sunday, October 7 - 8, 2017. This multi-faceted event is centered in the Hope Valley area south of Lake Tahoe and in the town of Markleeville, in Alpine County, CA. You can choose from numerous activities, including birdwatching, dutch oven cooking, a variety of hikes and tours, watercolor workshop, fly casting classes, speakers, music, and more. There is a fee for some activities and others are free. Get the details and sign up for activities of interest on the Festival website.

Reno Bites Restaurant Week - Monday through Sunday, October 9 - 15, 2017. Explore and enjoy locally owned restaurants. The week offers prix fix menus, specialty items and price points and exceptional food-based events. The event culminates in a Chef Showdown in which Reno's best chefs compete against each other for prizes and bragging rights.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, October 12, 2017, 7 p.m. Scott E. Page examines the role diversity plays in complex systems. Lectures are free and open to the public. They are held in the Redfield Auditorium in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Gerlach Race Days - Friday through Sunday, October 13 - 15, 2017. Come to Gerlach for a weekend of fun celebrating the world land speed record, set by Thrust SSC on October 15, 1997. The record speed is 763 mph. It became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier. Family fun will include golf cart races, chili cook-off, car show, live music and more. Join Team Thrust for a special ravioli dinner on Friday, October 13 at Bruno's. Lodging is limited so make your reservations early. RV dry parking will be available.

Nevada Women's Expo - Friday and Saturday, October 13 - 14, 2017. Hundreds of exhibitors, unique products and services, new companies and local resources, all catering to the many needs of women, at every stage of life. At the Carson City Mall in Carson City.

Lake Tahoe Marathon - Friday through Sunday, October 13 - 15, 2017. This is actually a series of several running events. There will be lots going on at this family-friendly event. Refer to the Calendar of Events for all the details.

Redrun - The Hunt - Saturday, October 14, 2017. The Hunt is a team scavenger hunt that will take place in the heart of Virginia City. Run for your life as the zombie apocalypse engulfs the haunted town of Virginia City. The Hunt takes you through chilling landmarks like cemeteries, old tunnels, mining bunkers, and through the middle of this living ghost town. You can participate as a living runner, one of the living dead, or a living insane. Visit the Redrun website to register online and get all the details.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, October 14, 2017. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. Participate in hands-on art projects, storytelling and museum tours. October has a Halloween theme - "Día de los Muertos." Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Science Saturday at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, October 14, 2017. "Mining in Space" is this month's topic. Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the National Automobile Museum. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information.

Nevada Super Pet Adoption Day - Saturday, October 14, 2017, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is a team effort by five local animal welfare groups, including Nevada Humane Society, with the goal of pairing people and pets together. Come to Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno to pick a pet and enjoy food trucks, drinks, live music, bounce house, and doggie and kitty vendors. Free pet microchipping will be available from Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

Free Fall Photo Hikes - Saturday, October 14, 2017. Join Washoe County Park Rangers to explore nearby parks and photograph spectacular fall color. This hike is on the Mt. Rose Trail and starts at 12 noon. There will be hikes at different locations on the next three Saturdays as well, all at 2 p.m. - Galena Creek Regional Park on October 21, Bartley Ranch Regional Park on October 28, and Davis Creek Regional Park on November 4.

2017 Great Nevada ShakeOut - Thursday, October 19, 2017, 10:19 a.m. Nevada lies within one of the most seismically active regions in the United States. Along with California and Alaska, Nevada ranks in the top three states subject to the most large-scale earthquakes during the last 150 years. The Great Nevada ShakeOut is a simple, coordinated "drop, cover and hold on" exercise. Last year, more than 560,000 Nevadans participated. To register as an individual, business, school or government agency or organization, go to the official website. All Nevada residents are encouraged to register and participate.

Day Out with Thomas - Friday through Sunday, October 20 - 22 and 27 - 29, 2017. This family event offers aspiring engineers and their families the opportunity to take a ride with the classic storybook engine along with fun activities for the entire family. Activities will be at the V&T Railroad Depot in Virginia City and include a 25-minute train ride behind Thomas the Tank Engine™, temporary tattoos, face painting, story telling, videos, train play tables, mini golf, coloring caboose, meet and take photos with Sir Topham Hatt, and shop at the Thomas store. Tickets can be purchased online, by calling 866-468-7630, and at the Virginia City Depot.

Reno Zombie Crawl - Saturday, October 21, 2017. The Reno Zombie Crawl is one of the top 10 costumed Halloween parties in the nation, attracting around 20,000 undead to prowl the of downtown Reno. Enjoy thousands of dollars worth of costume contest prizes and drink specials at over 55 bars, clubs, restaurants and taverns. It's only $5 to join in. You can buy cups online or at the start bar on the night the zombies stalk the streets.

Pumpkinpalooza - Sunday, October 22, 2017, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Celebrate all things pumpkin at Victorian Square in downtown Sparks at the 2017 Pumpkin Palooza. This free event is a great way to family fun for Halloween.

2017 Beer & Chili Festival - Saturday and Sunday, October 21 - 22, 2017, 12 noon to 6 p.m. both days. Featuring the International Chili Society's (ICS) World Championship Chili Cookoff. A wide array of local and national brews will also be available. Festival admission is free, but you have to buy the tasting packages. The event is at the Grand Sierra Resort, 2500 E. 2nd Street in Reno.

79th Annual Nevada Day Parade - Saturday, October 28, 2017. Nevada Day is America's largest statehood celebration. Nevada Day activities and celebrations are centered in Carson City. Parade activities begin at 8 a.m. and the marching starts at 10 a.m. There lots of Nevada Day activities to enjoy, not just the parade. It's a big, family-friendly party in Carson City.

Bowling for Rhinos - Saturday and Sunday, October 28 - 29, 2017. These two events are an opportunity for the general public to have access to and enjoy the National Bowling Stadium while contributing to a great conservation effort by the National Association of Zoo Keepers. Many local businesses and organizations are sponsors as well. On Saturday, come for a Safe Halloween and Family Bowling from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Gala Event starts at 7 p.m. and is adults only. There will be an optional costume contest. Tickets for both are available online. All proceeds go to rhino and cheetah conservation.

Halloween - Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Haunted houses, trick-or-treating, pumpkin patches, and much more. The Reno area does Halloween in a big way and there are plenty of activities for everyone in the family, including a few for adults only.
