Big events during May, 2021 include... KTMB Great Community Clean-Up - Saturday, May 1, 2021, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Join Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) for the annual Great Community Cleanup. This event focuses on the cleanup of illegal dump sites and noxious weeds in the open spaces surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Every year over 750 volunteers come together to clean up our community. You will be able to choose from over 20 sites throughout the Truckee Meadows open-spaces. Go to Volunteer Opportunities to sign up and pick a work site. May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month - Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Check the website for related events and other information about wildfire prevention. May is Older Americans Month - May, 2021. Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of the 2021 celebration is "Communities of Strength." Bike Month - May, 2021. This month long bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. Key things this year include commuter challenge, educational and informational presentations, promoting partner events and rides and elevating community organizations and businesses. Visit the website for detailes about each of these. Galena Creek Visitor Center - The opening date for summer hours is pending updates to COVID plans. The surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 2021 Reno/Sparks Walk to Defeat ALS - Saturday, May 1, 2021, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be hosting our Annual Walk as a Car Parade so our families and friends are Walking TOGETHER, but SEPARATELY to ensure everyone's safety. Teams fundraise as a group and the funds go to help those living with ALS and their families in Nevada. The event will be at Reno High School. American Mountain Men - Tuesday, May 4, 2021, 5:30 p.m. Learn about the beaver trappers of the "fur trade era" (1800-1840) and how the American Mountain Men research and teach the skills and history of these important pathfinders. Historic Bowers Mansion opens for 2021 tours - Saturday, May 15, 2021, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bowers Mansion 2021 tours are every hour on the hour. Group tours available by appointment. Admission is $9 for ages 18 to 61, $6 for seniors ages 62+ and children 6 to 17, free for kids 5 and under. Bowers Mansion Regional Park is located at 4005 Old US Highway 395 North in Washoe Valley. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, May 8, 2021. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Touching the Sun." Tickets are sold per family group starting at $36. Admission is limited to 8 groups. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information. Reno Aces Baseball - May 13, 2021, 6:35 p.m. The Reno Aces start their 2021 season of home games with 6 in a row against the Las Vegas Aviators at Greater Nevada Field. It's fans in the stands this season - batter up! Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Canceled. Reno's biggest celebration has been canceled, but there are some other activities you can check out. Northern Nevada Celtic Celebration - Canceled for 2021. Idlewild Health Walks for Citizens with Dementia - Postponed until further notice. Mother's Day - Sunday, May 9, 2021. Check this article for Mother's Day events and activities, including Mother's Day dining choices. Reno Riverwalk Wine Walk - Saturday, May 15, 2021. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Tickets are limited to ONLY 250 participants, ticket start locations are staggered and all guests are required to wear a mask. Tickets are $30 and available online. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Programs on the Porch at Bowers Mansion - Friday, May 21, 2021, 7 p.m. Programs on the Porch for 2021 features performances by local musicians and even an appearance by former President Roosevelt. A variety of talents will be showcased during each Friday night of the series. The performance series is free, however donations are accepted. Bowers Mansion Regional Park is south of Reno, in Washoe Valley at 4005 Old U.S. Highway 395 North. More programs will be on May 28, June 4, 11, 18. Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Saturday, May 22, 2021. Due to COVID–19 restrictions, the annual Spring Fever Revival Show-n-Shine event has transformed into a Classic Car Poker Run. This Poker Run is all about having some great laughs with your friends, enjoying great food and music while going for a beautiful Saturday cruise. Visit the website for an application and details about the Poker Run. 38th Annual Chili on the Comstock and Craft Beer Tour - Saturday and Sunday, May 22 - 23, 2021. This event has participants sampling chili and craft brews from various merchants and booths spread out in zones around Virginia City, giving visitors the chance to discover more of the historic mining town than ever before. Ticket options give attendees the option of sampling from 12 chili booths including professional and local chefs, 12 craft beer samples, or for a better value and even more fun, a combination of the two. Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 31, 2021, with numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year.
