May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month - Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Check the website for related events and other information about wildfire prevention. May is Older Americans Month - All local activities canceled. Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of the 2020 celebration is "Make Your Mark." One Truckee River Month - entire month of May, 2020. Join us for 31 days of virtual events and resources all about the Truckee River. Even in these unprecedented times, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy our river. To see a full list, visit the events calendar for May, 2019. Galena Creek Visitor Center - Friday, May 1, 2020. Summer hours start - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sci-On! Science + Fiction Film Festival - May 4 through 9, 2020. Six days of online webinar science and science-fiction activities and independent film screenings. Events held with Zoom. Tickets are available online. (775) 830-5295. Reno Aces Baseball - Stay tuned for a revised schedule. A Virtual Salon: Indigenous Narratives in the Modern Context - Friday, May 15, 2020, 6 p.m. Join Nevada Humanities for a discussion about journalism, jurisdictional issues, and Indigenous narratives. A panel of Native scholars and journalists will discuss how the impacts of colonial mapping practices have created complex jurisdictional issues, inspiring a new generation of storytellers. Participants will be online answering questions. Historic Reno Walking Tours - All May, 2020 walking tours are canceled.. A decision is pending on tours and activities for the remainder of 2020. Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Canceled. Northern Nevada's biggest annual celebration of Latino heritage is at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. Come enjoy live music, Mexican dancing horses, food and drink, arts and crafts, carnival rides, live music, games, and much more. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 12 and seniors 65+. The Grand Sierra Resort is at 2500 E. 2nd Street in Reno. Heels & Hounds, a Benefit for Homeless Pets - Postponed until Sunday, October 25, 2020. Doors open at 10 a.m. At the Silver Legacy Grand Exposition Hall in Reno. Party for the animals at Nevada Humane Society's Heels & Hounds, Reno's premiere fashion experience. There will also be local boutique shopping, a silent auction, live auction, brunch and fashion show featuring local leaders strutting the catwalk. Tickets are available online. May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale - Saturday and Sunday, May 16 - 17, 2020, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Canceled. With more than 4,000 plants to choose from - perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetables, drought/heat tolerant plants, grasses, and succulents. Horticulturists and members of the Society will be on hand to offer growing tips. The sale will be at the May Arboretum and Botanical Garden in San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 North Sierra Street in Reno. Northern Nevada Science & Technology Festival - April 29 - May 2, 2020. Postponed. New date to be announced. This is a week-long community celebration of the innovation happening in our region. The festival will inspire and connect our community with the power of science and technology through hands-on school programs as well as a series of free, family-friendly events hosted by well-known formal and informal educational organizations throughout Northern Nevada. Go to the website for event details, when, and where. Northern Nevada Celtic Celebration - Saturday, May 16, 2020. Postponed. Possible future date to be announced. The Northern Nevada Celtic Celebration at Bartley Ranch Regional Park features activities and events that originated mostly in Scotland and Ireland, such as highland athletic events, spirited music, and graceful, energetic forms of dance. This great family event has food and drink vendors and parking is free. Admission is $15 walk-up rate, $20 if you want to park on-site. Kids 12 and under are free with a paid admission. Idlewild Health Walks for Citizens with Dementia - on Tuesdays during 2020 at 10 a.m. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) is offering a series of free, weekly interpretive walks for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Idlewild Health Walks are an extension of the Discover Your Parks walks from TMPF, which encourage people to get outdoors to explore and care for local parks. Hands ON! at Home - Saturday, May 9, 2020. Since Hands ON! Second Saturdays is canceled while the Nevada Museum of Art is closed, you can enjoy the program at home and engage in simple art practices using basic art supplies and household objects. You are invited to share your creations by putting photos on social media: #ShareNevadaArt #HandsONatHome and tag @nevadaart. Reno River Festival - Saturday and Sunday, May 9 - 10, 2020. Postponed until August 15 - 16, 2020. The annual Reno River Festival is at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. This event is free to attend and has become one of the top draws among Reno's other big spring, summer, and fall events. Whitewater kayaking competitions are the main reason for the Reno River Festival, but there is much more. Part of the Reno River Festival that is outside of the water, the Reno River Roll is a casual 5-mile costumed slow ride open to everyone and all types of bicycles. Other attractions include free entertainment on two stages, a Craft Beer Village, Wine Village, Reno Tahoe Adventure Park and lots more. Mother's Day - Sunday, May 10, 2020. Most Mother's Day events and activities have been canceled, including almost all Mother's Day dining choices. Bike Month - May, 2020. This month long bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. There will be lots of free events with perks and prizes. There is a lot going on - go to the Bike Month website to learn about the events, contests and prizes. Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Canceled. The streets of downtown Reno will be packed full of classic cars, food and beverage booths, memorabilia, street faire vendors, free entertainment and a Celebrity show and shine on Saturday. This event is open to all 1979 and older vehicles, with free entry for all Hot August Nights 2019 registered car participants. The entry fee for non-registered participants is $40. It's free for the public to attend and enjoy the fun. Hours start at 8 a.m. both days. Reno Street Food - Food Truck Friday - Opening delayed until possibly July, 2020. Come to Reno's Idlewild Park for an evening of fun, music, and lots of good things to eat and drink from Reno's fleet of food trucks. It's free to come enjoy the park from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., but the food and drink are for sale. The Idlewild Park train will be running during this event. Reno Street Food will be every Friday through August 28, 2020. No Dogs. Go to "Food Trucks and Food Truck Events in Reno and Sparks" for information about more food truck events. Reno Wine Walk - Postponed until further notice. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Historic Bowers Mansion opens 2020 season with Civil War Reenactment - Canceled. Saturday, May 9, 2020, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bowers Mansion will begin its 2019 tour season with a live Civil War reenactment. Visitors will be transported to the days of Nevada's statehood, enjoy the exhibits, grounds and tours of the mansion. The ongoing Civil War exhibits and demonstrations are free. Self-guided tours of the historic Bowers Mansion will be available for $7 adults, $5 children and seniors. Bowers Mansion Regional Park is located at 4005 Old US Highway 395 North in Washoe Valley. 37th Annual Chili on the Comstock - Saturday and Sunday, May 16 - 17, 2020. Postponed. New date to be announced. Taking place along C Street, Virginia City's main drag, the event promises all the favorite flavors and brings the Craft Beer Tour, Fun with the Runs 5K, music and family-friendly activities. The event runs both days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Likely canceled since it requires bars to be open. Saturday, May 23, 2020. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on May 25, 2020, but there are numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year. Reno-Tahoe Odyssey - Friday and Saturday, May 29 - 30, 2020. Canceled. This is a 178 mile running relay race that starts and finishes in Reno. Teams of up to 12 runners complete a big circle that includes climbing up to Lake Tahoe. Two sub-sections of the whole race will be run simultaneously on June 1 - the Capital Odyssey Relay from Carson City and the Comstock Odyssey Relay from Virginia City. To sign up and get all the details, visit the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey website. FamFest 2020 - Canceled. Saturday, May 30, 2020. This free event will be at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. FamFest is a great day in the park with your entire family, including those furry ones… just make sure they are on a leash. There will be lots to do, including free kites for the first 500 kids ages 2 to 12, giveaways and contests, face painting and other activities, food trucks, and live entertainment including dog shows. Free admission and free parking.
