May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month - "Prepare Now! Wildfire Know No Season." Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Check the website for related events and other information about wildfire prevention.

Galena Creek Visitor Center - Monday, May 1, 2018. Summer hours start - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Reno Aces Baseball - Monday, May 4, 2018. The Reno Aces' first home game in May at Greater Nevada Field will be vs. the Tacoma Rainiers, starting at 6:35 p.m. More home games in May will include other opponents - Albuquerque Isotopes, El Paso Chihuahuas and Las Vegas 51s.

Idlewild Health Walks for Citizens with Dementia - on Tuesdays during 2018 at 10 a.m. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) is offering a series of free, weekly interpretive walks for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Idlewild Health Walks are an extension of the Discover Your Parks walks from TMPF, which encourage people to get outdoors to explore and care for local parks. Meet at the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation office at 50 Cowan Drive in Idlewild Park. For more information, call (775) 410-1702 or email info@tmparksfoundation.org.

Day at the Museum at UNR - Saturday, May 5, 2018, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The University of Nevada, Reno invites visitors to Day at the Museum, an interactive walking tour of nine museums on and around campus. The event is free and open to the public. Museums will feature different hands-on activities and giveaways. This event is ideal for families and anyone interested in learning about the arts, history, and earth, life and astronomical sciences that campus has to offer. KTMB Great Community Cleanup 2018 - Saturday, May 5, 2018, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This event focuses on the cleanup of illegal dump sites in the open spaces surrounding the Truckee Meadows as well as the removal of noxious weeds before they bloom and spread. Items removed from the open spaces include appliances, furniture, yard waste, hazardous waste, vehicles and more. You can sign up online to volunteer and pick the site where you would like to help.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Saturday and Sunday, May 5 - 6, 2018. Northern Nevada's biggest annual celebration of Latino heritage is at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. Come enjoy live music, Mexican dancing horses, food and drink, arts and crafts, carnival rides, live music, games, and much more. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 12 and seniors 65+. The Grand Sierra Resort is at 2500 E. 2nd Street in Reno.

"Beauty and the Beast" at the Pioneer Center - Saturday and Sunday, May 5 - 6, 2018. This classic story is filled with dance, intrigue, and is fun for the entire family. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's score. Guest principal dancers who have danced with Salt Lake City's Ballet West will perform with the large cast from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre. The Saturday performance will be at 8 p.m. and the Sunday performance will be at 2 p.m. Ticket for adults are $27 to $54. Ticket for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older are $22 to $49. For tickets, call the Pioneer Center at 1-866-553-6605 or get them on-line. The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is at 100 S. Virginia Street in Reno.

Giant Yard Sale at Nevada Humane Society - Saturday and Sunday, May 5 - 6, 2018. Shop for a variety of treasures generously donated by the community. Proceeds benefit homeless pets. The yard sale will take place in the parking lot behind Nevada Humane Society, located at 2825 Longley Lane in Reno, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (no early birds, please). Goodies for sale will include kitchen items, art, interior decorations, tools, jewelry and accessories, pet items and more.

Fire Up For Firefighters Running Trail Event - Sunday, May 6, 2018. This charitable race event in Reno will take place on the trails at Bartley Ranch Regional Park. All race proceeds will benefit fallen firefighters' families and firefighters injured in the line of duty. This event is open to the public and highlights trails in park. You can register online. Sponsored by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Living With Fire Program in cooperation with federal, state and local program partners.

Reno 150 Birthday Celebration - Wednesday, May 9, 2018, starting at 4 p.m. The City of Reno and the Reno Aces co-host "The Biggest Little Birthday" Reno 150 celebration at Greater Nevada Field. It's free and open to the public outside the stadium, but you'll have to get a free ticket to get in to the evening's baseball game (which starts at 6:35 p.m.). Here are the free activities you can enjoy without going to the game...

  • Learn about Reno's history, people and events.
  • Visit booths showcasing historical and cultural organizations.
  • Music, dancing and a large display of birthday cupcakes.

Reno Gem and Mineral Society Artisan Craft Fair - Friday through Sunday, May 11 - 13, 2018. Society members are offering for sale a variety of unique items: jewelry created from stones found throughout Nevada, local photography, home decor, and many more items. Learn how to become a member and get involved with the Society. The fair will be at Reno Town Mall, 4001 S. Virginia Street. Admission and parking are free.

May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale - Saturday and Sunday, May 12 - 13, 2018, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. With more than 2,500 plants to choose from - each identified by their common and botanical name, type of flower and sunlight requirement, this is a dream sale for the newbie and the seasoned gardener alike. Horticulturists and members of the Society will be on hand to offer growing tips. The sale will be at the May Arboretum and Botanical Garden in San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 North Sierra Street in Reno.

Library Book Sale - Saturday through Sunday, May 12 - 20, 2018. Read Again Bookstore, a function of Friends of Washoe County Library, holds several book sales during the year. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. A day for Friends members only is on Friday, May 11, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join at the door. All other days are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Historic Reno Walking Tours - Saturday, May 12, 2018. Guided walks through some of Reno's historic districts from the Historic Reno Preservation Society (HRPS) are open to the public. This walk is "Downtown Sparks." It starts at 10 a.m. and the fee is $10, free for NRPS members. Other walks this month are on May 15, 19, 22, 26 and 29.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, May 12, 2018. Join in on an adventure about "Roving on Mars." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, May 12, 2018, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. New exhibitions, community collaborations, cultural explorations, guest performances and monthly themes rotate in this series of monthly programs.

Reno River Festival - Saturday and Sunday, May 12 - 13, 2018. The annual Reno River Festival is at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. This event is free to attend and has become one of the top draws among Reno's other big spring, summer, and fall events. Whitewater kayaking competitions are the main reason for the Reno River Festival, but there is much more. Part of the Reno River Festival that is outside of the water, the Reno River Roll is a casual 5-mile costumed slow ride open to everyone and all types of bicycles. It starts at the Virginia Street Bridge.

Mother's Day - Sunday, May 13, 2018. There are numerous events and activities Mom might enjoy on Mother's Day. You can also take her out to one of the Mother's Day dining choices in the Reno area.

Bike Week - Sunday through Saturday, May 13 - 19, 2018. This weeklong bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. There will be lots of free events with perks and prizes. There is way too much going on to list here - go to the Bike Week website to learn about local bike shops, the events, clinics, contests and prizes, families and kids, and much more.

Walk with Washoe hikes - Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Join Washoe County staff for this hike at North Valleys Regional Park at 6:30 p.m. This is one of a series of free Tuesday evening outings at various Washoe County parks and trails. The series continues through October 2, 2018.

Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Friday and Saturday, May 18 - 19, 2018. The streets of downtown Reno will be packed full of classic cars, food and beverage booths, memorabilia, street faire vendors, free entertainment and a Celebrity show and shine on Saturday. This event is open to all 1976 and older vehicles, with free entry for all Hot August Nights 2018 registered car participants. The entry fee for non-registered participants is $35. It's free for the public to attend and enjoy the fun. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Reno Street Food - Food Truck Friday - Friday, May 18, 2018. Come to Reno's Idlewild Park for an evening of fun, music, and lots of good things to eat and drink from Reno's fleet of food trucks. It's free to come enjoy the park from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., but the food and drink are for sale. The Idlewild Park train will be running during this event. Reno Street Food will be every Friday through September 28, 2018. This is a dog-free event. Go to "Food Trucks and Food Truck Events in Reno and Sparks" for information about more food truck events.

Nitro Circus - Friday, May 18, 2018. A fully choreographed live spectacular with FMX, BMX, skateboard, inline and scooter athletes performing skillful but insane stunts on a range of contraptions. The daredevil tricks are mind blowing and a whole lot of fun. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be at Greater Nevada Field in Reno.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, May 19, 2018. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Kid's Triathlon in Sparks - Saturday, May 19, 2018. The event is the perfect introduction to the world of triathlon races for children ages 4 to 14. The Sparks event will feature a swim-bike-run format. The swimming portion will take place in the Alf Sorensen Community Center pool, 1400 Baring Blvd., followed by the bike and run courses just outside of the center. Multiple distances will be offered based on the age group of the triathlon participants. Races are not timed as the focus is to provide a triathlon experience in a fun atmosphere. 35th Annual Chili on the Comstock - Saturday and Sunday, May 19 - 20, 2018. Taking place along C Street, Virginia City's main drag, the event promises all the favorite flavors and brings the return of the Fireball Saloon Crawl, Fun with the Runs 5K, music and family-friendly activities. The event runs both days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, May 26, 2018. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Early voting for 2018 Primary Election begins - Saturday, May 26, 2018. The two weeks of early voting for the 2018 primary election runs until June 8, 2018. If you don't vote during this period, you'll have to wait until election day on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on May 28, 2018, but there are numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year.
