May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month - "Prepare. Anticipate. Evacuate." Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Galena Creek Visitor Center - Monday, May 1, 2017. Summer hours start - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Reno Aces Baseball - Monday, May 1, 2017. The Reno Aces' first home game in May at Aces Ballpark will be vs. the Fresno Grizzlies, starting at 6:35 p.m. More home games in May will include other opponents - Salt Lake Bees, New Orleans Zephyrs, Round Rock Express and Sacramento River Cats.

Discover Your Parks Walks for Seniors - Thursdays, May 4, 11, 18, 25, 2017. The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, together with the Reno Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, is leading free walks in four different Reno parks during May, 2017. Walks start at 10 a.m. For more information, call (310) 469-8971.

Grand Opening of The Eddy - Friday through Sunday, May 5 - 7, 2017. The Eddy is an outdoor beer garden and community space in downtown Reno, constructed of shipping containers. The grand opening will feature food trucks, a happy hour, local artists and more. The Eddy is at 16 S. Sierra Street next to the Truckee River and Riverside Hotel, filling what was for years an empty lot. This is a great new addition to the Riverwalk District.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Tuesday, May 9, 2017. This month's lecture is from renowned herpetologist Harry W. Greene. He is widely regarded as the world's leading expert on the biology of snakes, with his 1997 book "Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature" being named a New York Times Notable Book and winning a PEN Literary Award. Greene has also championed an exciting and controversial idea about putting big-game back onto the North American continent, called Pleistocene rewilding. His free lecture will be at 7 p.m. in the Redfield Auditorium in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Greene is the final speaker in the College of Science's 2016-2017 Discover Science Lecture Series.

Reno 150 Kickoff Event - Tuesday, May 9, 2017, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Reno 150, a year-long effort to celebrate Reno's 150th birthday, or sesquicentennial. The City invites the community to attend the official Reno 150 Kickoff Event on the City Plaza located at 30 North Virginia Street, next to City Hall. Reno was officially established on May 9, 1868. This free, family-friendly event will include numerous speakers, activities, entertainment, snapshots of Reno history and more. It's the first of several Reno 150 events throughout the year leading up to the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2018.

May Arboretum Society hosts Succulents & Wine Workshop - Wednesday, May 10, 2017. Enjoy a glass of wine while creating your own succulent garden during this hands-on workshop. Learn about the appropriate soils, proper watering and care needed to grow succulents. The cost is $35 for members, $50 for non-members. The workshop will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Ranch House in San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 North Sierra Street in Reno.

Historic Reno Walking Tours - Saturday, May 13, 2017. Guided walks through some of Reno's historic districts from the Historic Reno Preservation Society (HRPS) are open to the public. This walk is "DeLongchamps Residential Architecture," featuring buildings designed by our famous local architect. It starts at 10 a.m. and the fee is $10, free for NRPS members. Other walks this month are on May 16, 20, 23, 27, and 30.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, May 13, 2017. Join in on an adventure about "Science Fiction and Science Fact." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, May 13, 2017. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Reno Wildland Fire Awareness Multi-Hour Trail Event - Saturday, May 13, 2017. This 3rd annual charitable race event in Reno will take place on the trails at Bartley Ranch Regional Park. All race proceeds will benefit our fallen firefighters' families and firefighters injured in the line of duty. This event is open to the public and highlights trails in park. You can register online. Hosted by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Living With Fire Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Reno Sculpture Fest - Friday through Sunday, May 12 - 14, 2017. The Reno Sculpture Fest is a free community event featuring larger-than-life sculptures, art and sound stages, live music, late-night afterparties, and a variety of hands-on activities for kids and adults. The event will be held on the ReTrac Plaza in downtown Reno, near the Reno Arch and between the Eldorado Hotel Casino and the Whitney Peak Hotel.

Reno River Festival - Saturday and Sunday, May 13 - 14, 2017. The annual Reno River Festival will be at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. This event is free to attend and has become one of the top draws among Reno's other big spring, summer, and fall events. This year, there are two events open to everyone. The Reno River Roll, a casual 5-mile costumed slow ride that starts at the new Virginia Street Bridge. The Reno Great River Relay is the newest event at the Reno River Festival. The 8-mile raft relay will send teams of four racing down the Truckee River.

Mother's Day - Sunday, May 14, 2017. There are numerous events and activities Mom might enjoy on Mother's Day. You can also take her out to one of the Mother's Day dining choices in the Reno area.

Bike Week - Monday through Friday, May 15 - 19, 2017. This weeklong bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. There will be lots of free events with perks and prizes. There is way too much going on to list here - go to the Bike Week website to learn about local bike shops, the events, clinics, contests and prizes, families and kids, and much more.

Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Friday and Saturday, May 19 - 20, 2017. The streets of downtown Reno will be packed full of classic cars, food and beverage booths, memorabilia, street faire vendors, free entertainment and a Celebrity show and shine on Saturday. This event is open to all 1976 and older vehicles, with free entry for all Hot August Nights 2017 registered car participants. The entry fee for non-registered participants is $35. It's free for the public to attend and enjoy the fun. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Reno Street Food - Food Truck Friday - Saturday, May 19, 2017. Come to Reno's Idlewild Park for an evening of fun, music, and lots of good things to eat and drink from Reno's fleet of food trucks. It's free to come enjoy the park from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., but the food and drink are for sale. The Idlewild Park train will be running during this event. Reno Street Food will be every Friday through September 29, 2017. Go to "Food Trucks and Food Truck Events in Reno and Sparks" for information about more food truck events.

Spring Wings Festival in Fallon - Friday and Saturday, May 19 - 20, 2017. Spring Wings is an annual celebration of shorebird and waterfowl migration through the Lahontan Valley of north-central America. Take part in guided tours, visit interactive and informative exhibits, see special talks and demonstrations and discover nature through hands on activities. Event headquarters is at the Churchill County multi-purpose building is at 225 Sheckler Road in Fallon. For more information, call (775) 423-5128.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, May 20, 2017. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Mini BioBlitz at Mayberry Park - Saturday, May 20, 2017, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Experts specializing in insects, birds, plants, mammals, and reptiles will explore the parks with the goal of identifying as many species as possible. Researchers will lead groups of community volunteers through Mayberry Park to help collect data and gain a better understanding of biodiversity in the Truckee Meadows. (310)-469-8971.

34th Annual Chili on the Comstock - Saturday and Sunday, May 20 - 21, 2017. Taking place along C Street, Virginia City's main drag, the event promises all the favorite flavors and brings the return of the Fireball Saloon Crawl, Fun with the Runs 5K, music and family-friendly activities. The event runs both days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, May 27, 2017. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on May 29, 2017, but there are numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year.

PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - Wednesdays, May 10 and 24, 2017, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel including EMT's and paramedics. This discussion group IS NOT formal therapy and is based on the original model of gatherings of Vietnam veterans before PTSD was recognized as a treatable condition by the VA or civilian medical community. VFW Post 9211 is located a block west of the Virginia Street / Moana lane intersection, adjacent to the baseball fields. The Post number is (775) 825-7007.
