Big events during July, 2016 include...
Artown - Thursday through Sunday, June 30 - July 31, 2016. Reno becomes Artown during all of July. Artown 2016 is the 22st anniversary of this multi-faceted event, bringing Reno residents and visitors a month's worth of music, art, dance and other cultural experiences. There are nearly 500 individual events, exhibits and workshops, with over 70% of the events and performances free. 4th of July Fireworks and Celebrations - Sunday and Monday, July 3 - 4, 2016. Get out and enjoy an Independence Day weekend at any of numerous fireworks shows and other 4th of July activities in Reno, Sparks, Virginia City, and up at Lake Tahoe. Biggest Little City Wingfest - Saturday through Monday, July 2 - 4, 2016. Downtown Reno will host the 3rd Annual Biggest Little City Wing Fest. This event brings over 65,000 attendees and serves over 20,000 pounds of chicken wings each year. This year's event will feature three days of finger lickin' chicken wings, live entertainment on outdoor stages, street faire vendors, a VIP Hen House and local celebrity wing judges. Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Monday from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Reno Aces Baseball - Monday, July 4, 2016. The Reno Aces' first home game in July is on Independence Day vs. the Tacoma Rainiers. Enjoy a great 4th of July fireworks show after this game. There will be 16 more home games during the month. Other opponents will include the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Sacramento River Cats, and Fresno Grizzlies. Guided Walking Tours from HRPS - Tuesday, July 5, 2016. The first guided walking tour in July from the Historic Reno Preservation Society will visit the Historic UNR Campus. Several more walks are scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays in July, plus a Sunday tour on July 24. Join in to learn about many aspects of Reno's colorful history. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival - Friday, July 8, 2016. The 2016 Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival runs from July 8 through August 21. This 44th season of the Festival features two main plays ("The Comedy of Errors" and "Forever Plaid") in addition to all of the other shows and activities making up this exceptional event at Sand Harbor on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Circus Circus 24-Hour Mural Marathon - Friday and Saturday, July 15 - 16, 2016. Watch art in action at this unique competition. In just 24 hours, seven artists will create wall-sized murals on the exterior walls of Circus Circus in downtown Reno. Virginia Street will be closed for the event from 5th to 6th street. There will be music, food and art vendors. This event is not just a competition but a show for audiences of all ages. Competition begins at 10 a.m. on July 15 and goes through the night, ending at 10 a.m. July 16. Reno Superhero Crawl - Saturday, July 16, 2016. Get dressed up like your favorite superhero (or villian) to join this big adult party in downtown Reno. The first and largest superhero crawl in the world starts at 8 p.m. and goes all night. Enjoy drink specials, contests, free entry into the clubs and more. 16th Annual Art Paws - Sunday, July 17, 2016. Art Paws is Artown's only event specially for pets (i.e., dogs) and their people. The event is free, featuring pet contests and demonstrations. More than 80 artists, crafters and animal related vendors and non-profit animal organizations will be present. Silent auctions, raffle prizes, live music, and a beer garden for the humans. All proceeds go to 3 local animal charity groups. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive in Reno. Washoe County Library Booksale - Friday through Sunday, July 9 - 17, 2016. Read Again Bookstore, a function of Friends of Washoe County Library, holds several book sales during the year. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. Preview day for Friends members is on the first Friday of each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. The sale is open to all every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, July 9, 2016. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Journeying to the Moon with Dick Simmonds and Tom Taormina." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, July 9, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. American Century Championship - Tuesday through Sunday, July 19 - 24, 2016. The 27th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament will be at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course near South Lake Tahoe and Stateline. see more than 80 entertainment and sports celebrities, including Charles Barkley, Larry the Cable Guy, Roger Clemens, John Elway, Andre Iguodala, Heather LeMaster, Bode Miller, Dan Quayle, Bret Saberhagen, Joe Theismann, Justin Timberlake, Michael Waltrip, and many, many more. Discount tickets available at Raley's, Bel-Air, and Nob Hill stores. The event benefits the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, July 16, 2016. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. For Artown, it will be the Vinegogh Art and Wine Walk. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Night in the Country Music Festival - Thursday through Saturday, July 21 - 23, 2016. Nevada's longest running country music festival is held in Yerington. This year, the festival will bring in bigt-name artists with the Josh Abbott Band, Tyler Farr, Chase Rice, and Kip More. The main stage will also feature several acts each night. There is on-site camping and lots of partying at the Full Moon Saloon. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, July 23, 2016. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Northern Nevada Pride Parade and Festival - Saturday, July 23, 2016. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and will travel down California Avenue between Plumas and Arlington. The festival will be at Wingfield Park with entertainment on two stages until 6 p.m. Admission is a $5 donation. Everyone is invited. Proceeds benefit the local LGBT community center. ART & Nature at the May Arboretum - Sunday, July 24, 2016. Join the May Arboretum Society for a morning of Art at the Arboretum celebrating the union of ART & Nature. Experience the creative process at work while you meander through the gardens observing and speaking with artists at work. Painters, weavers, poetry readings, live acoustic musicians, artist-lead somatic movement and much more. Purchase a piece of art, take part in the silent auction featuring works of art by participating artists, or just enjoy the shady oak grove, peaceful waterfall and beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees that make the Arboretum so special. Refreshments will be available for purchase. This is a free Artown event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Summertime BioBlitz - Sunday, July 24, 2016. In partnership with Nevada Bugs and Butterflies, Nevada Native Plant Society, Museum of Natural History and the City of Reno Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is hosting its first Summertime BioBlitz at the California Building in Idlewild Park. Bioblitz is a free and open to all ages event designed to get the community outside and engaged in a fun, scientific, and meaningful day-long survey of Idlewild Park. The event starts at 9 a.m. and is part of Artown, with engaging nature-based art projects that encourage learning about the natural world. For more information, call (775) 453-0427. Reno Aces Baseball - Tuesday through Sunday, July 26 - 31, 2016. Enjoy an Aces game at Greater Nevada Field during this 6 game homestand. Opponents will be the Sacramento River Cats and Fresno Grizzlies. Hot August Nights Kickoff in Virginia City - Friday and Saturday, July 29 - 30, 2016. The kickoff Hot August Nights event is up in Virginia City, with nightly cruises, a celebrity Show-n-Shine, poker run and free live entertainment. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Of course, Virginia City restaurants and bars will keep going into the night after official event hours. Artown Closing Night Celebration - July 31, 2016. The free closing night party will be from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Wingfield Park Glenn Little Amphitheater. Join Artown in closing out the month's festivities with America's Got Talent sensation, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - Wednesdays, July 13 and 27, 2016, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel including EMT's and paramedics. This discussion group IS NOT formal therapy and is based on the original model of gatherings of Vietnam veterans before PTSD was recognized as a treatable condition by the VA or civilian medical community. VFW Post 9211 is located a block west of the Virginia Street / Moana lane intersection, adjacent to the baseball fields. The Post number is (775) 825-7007.
