Free history presentations from Historic Reno Preservation Society - Sunday, January 5, 2020, 12:30 p.m. This lecture will give a brief, historical overview of Washoe (Wašhiw) people whose ancestors began occupying the Tahoe region up to 10,000 years ago. Downtown Reno Library, 301 S. Center Street, Reno.

Restless Artists' Theatre presents "What Rhymes With America" - Weekends, January 10 - 26, 2020. A Father and his teenage daughter stand on either side of a closed door. Life is unraveling for him, and it is entirely uncertain for her. So begins Melissa James Gibson's poignant, funny play about estrangement and the partially examined life. Winter Trails - January, 2020. Winter Trails is month-long event where you can try snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing at participating ski resorts and parks in the Lake Tahoe region and across the nation. People new to these sports will learn how easy it is to get started, pick up information about buying needed equipment, and get information about places to enjoy being outside during winter.

Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers - Friday, January 10, 2020, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) is bringing the Subaru/ Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers to Reno to lead a free workshop and teach us how we can all become stewards of our environment. The Trainers provide proven, research-based skills, education and techniques for effectively communicating with visitors about getting outside in an environmentally sustainable way. At Western Heritage Interpretive Center in Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Rd. in Reno. It's free, but you are asked to register online if planning to attend.

Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, January 11, 18, 25, 2020. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2020 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. The January 11 performance will be by the Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, January 11, 2020. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 11, 2020, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, monthly, nature-focused program for children of all ages from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF). Along with their parents and guardians, children will be able to explore a local park, identify and discover the natural world, and play games. Children will discover plants, animals, and the environment in their own backyard, as well as allow parents to experience and learn alongside their children. This month's program, about extremophiles, is at Idlewild Park. For more information, call (775) 410-1702. Please register online.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, January 11, 2020. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Training Future Astronauts." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Washoe County Library Book Sale - January 11 - 19, 2020. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. This is your chance to get big bargains on books and other media while supporting your Washoe County Library System. Sale hours are every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preview day for Friends members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door.

Free UNR Extended Studies Open House - Wednesday, January 15, 2020, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The community is invited to the free 2020 UNR Extended Studies Open House to learn about the continuing education program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Come learn more about professional development short courses and certificates, academic credit courses and online degree programs, and activities for youth and senior learners offered by Extended Studies. Participants will enjoy free refreshments and can receive discounts for on-site registration of select courses, and enter to win certificates toward course fees and other prizes. The free event will be in south Reno at the University's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, Building A. Parking is free.

Free history presentations from Historic Reno Preservation Society - Wednesday, January 15, 2020, 5:30 p.m. Harold's Club emerged from a hole in the wall operation on North Virginia Street to become the largest casino in the world and helped to put Reno on the map. The Sheep Show - Thursday through Saturday, January 16 - 18, 2020. This is the annual Wild Sheep Foundation Convention and Sporting Expo. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center exhibit hall features more than 400 exhibits of the finest guides and outfitters from North America and around the globe plus top of the line retailers selling gear, guns, art, taxidermy, jewelry, furs and every other outdoor item you need. Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience (YWCE) - Saturday, January 18, 2020, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event is part of The Sheep Show. Over twenty different hands-on learning experiences will be available, with the goal to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife conservationists. No need to buy a day pass to The Sheep Show exhibit hall, as the youth area takes place outside the exhibit hall. However, an adult who brings a youth to the YWCE can obtain a day pass for admittance to the exhibit hall.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 18, 2020. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Reno Women's March - Saturday, January 18, 2020, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Women's March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists and organizers to engage in their local communities through training, outreach programs and events. Join us as we march from the BELIEVE sign in downtown Reno to the warmth of the Reno Events Center to enjoy speeches and rousing local entertainment.

Wild Winter Weekends at Animal Ark - Saturday and Sunday, January 18 - 19 and February 15 - 16, 2020. Come enjoy Animal Ark's residents in a winter setting, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Adults are $16, seniors $15, children $13, 2 and under free. Animal Ark is at 1265 Deerlodge Road north of Reno. Take 395 / I580 north to Red Rock. Go right for 11.5 miles, then right on Deerlodge. 1-775-970-3111 (Must dial 1-775 even from Reno area). Please call on event day as severe weather may cancel festivities.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 20, 2020. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Free Days at National Parks - The first free day in 2020 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20. There are several more during 2020. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it.

Choices for Change - Free Senior-Focused Seminars - Friday, January 24, 2020, 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Professionals speak about topics followed by question and answer sessions. Topics include yoga, nutrition, taxes, living trusts, investing, medicare, dementia/Alzheimer, real estate in probate, staging, estate sales, de-cluttering, stretching for balance, in-home care, senior living communities, Veterans benefits and much more. At Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall, across from the Reno Sparks Convention Center.

Wild and Scenic Film Festival - Saturday, January 25, 2020, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wild & Scenic Film Festival comes to Whitney Peak Hotel, 255 N. Virginia Street in Reno. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 students, seniors (55+), veterans. Kids 5 and under free. Prepare to be inspired. Attendees can expect to see award winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, and Native American and indigenous cultures. Hosted by Friends of Black Rock - High Rock.

"The Play That Goes Wrong" at the Pioneer Center - Friday through Sunday, January 24 - 26, 2020. What would happen if Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python had an illegitimate Broadway baby? Tickets are available online - visit the website for details. The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is at 100 S. Virginia Street in Reno.

Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, January 25, 2020. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - January 29 through February 14, 2020. Now is the time to sign up for this series of Olympic-style competitions. The Games are open to citizens 50+.

Brew HaHa 2020 - Saturday, January 25, 2020. Brew HaHa is a benefit for Sierra Arts Foundation, featuring a huge selection of micro and macro Beer tasting plus live entertainment featuring The Garage Boys. VIP admission is 7 p.m., with general admission at 8 p.m. VIP Tickets are $70 (plus tax & fee), general admission is $50 (plus tax & fee). Each is $10 more the day of the event. Tickets are available online or by calling (775) 356-3300. Brew HaHa will be at The Nugget, 1100 Nugget Avenue in Sparks.

Dance Party with Note-Able Music Therapy Services - Saturday, January 25, 2020, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Freestyle dance party with NMTS dance instructor Wendy Firestone. This is an unstructured dance class for people of all ages and abilities. Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a guardian. You're welcome to bring a sack lunch for after the dance party. Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rat begins on January 25, 2020. This celebration is also known as the Chinese Spring Festival.

Cabin Fever for Kids Ages 4 to 6 - Tuesdays, January 28 to February 25, 2020, 10 a.m. Join us to learn about nature in the winter. Each session will feature a short lesson, a story, an indoor activity, and a guided outdoor exploration in the May Arboretum. At the Wilbur D.
