Happy New Year! - Monday, January 1, 2018. Winter Break Camps and Activities - through January 12, 2018. To keep the kids occupied during winter break, check out the many things happening around the Truckee Meadows. Reno Bighorns Basketball - Friday, January 5, 2018. The Bighorns take on the Northern Arizona Suns at the Reno Events Center, tip off at 7 p.m. Other home games this month are on January 7, 27 and 29. Restless Artists' Theatre presents Small Engine Repair - Friday, January 5, 2018. Former high school buddies Frank, Swaino and Packie - now past their prime - meet off-hours one night in Frank's out-of-the-way repair shop under cloudy circumstances that only Frank seems to have a handle on. Winter Trails is month-long event where you can try snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing at participating ski resorts and parks in the Lake Tahoe region and across the nation. People new to these sports will learn how easy it is to get started, pick up information about buying needed equipment, and get information about places to enjoy being outside during winter. Cyclocross National Championships - Tuesday through Sunday, January 9 - 14, 2018. At Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. Cyclocross is an event known to challenge riders at their best, often in the worst conditions with difficult terrain, obstacles and often inclement weather conditions. Cyclocross is USA Cycling's fastest growing segment with global rider participation at an all-time high. There will be a vendor expo and lots of activities and fun for spectators. Visit the website for event schedule and details about participating. Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, January 13, 20, 27, 2018. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2018 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Sheep Dip Show - Friday and Saturday, January 12 - 13, 2018. This parody for charity is an annual event with skits, songs, dances and the infamous Shaft Award, exposing the foibles and follies of the Truckee Meadows. The show is performed by area locals, members of the media and a few of our (infamous) politicians. This year's supported charity is the Education Renaissance of Nevada Initiative. The show will be at Eldorado Hotel Casino in Reno. Tickets online are $40 per person. For tickets by phone, call (775) 786-5700. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, January 13, 2018. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Washoe County Library Book Sale - January 13 - 21, 2018. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. This is your chance to get big bargains on books and other media while supporting your Washoe County Library System. Sale hours are every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preview day for Friends members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. Wild Winter Weekends at Animal Ark - Saturday and Sunday, January 13 - 14 and February 17 - 18, 2018. Come enjoy Animal Ark's residents in a winter setting, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Animal Ark is at 1265 Deerlodge Road north of Reno. Take 395 north to Red Rock. Go right for 11.5 miles, then right on Deerlodge. 1-775-970-3111 (Must dial 1-775 even from Reno area). Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 15, 2018. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service - Monday, January 15, 2018. As part of the National MLK Day of Service, Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) will be hosting a bioblitz in Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Day of Service Bioblitz is free and open to volunteers of all ages. We will be cataloging all living things in the park as part of a annual phenology project, to garner a better understanding of the plants, animals, and other wildlife and how their populations are changing. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park is located on the corner of Coretta Way and Kennedy Drive in Reno. (775) 453-0566. Free UNR Extended Studies Open House - Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The community is invited to the free 2018 UNR Extended Studies Open House to learn about the continuing education program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Come learn more about professional development short courses and certificates, academic credit courses and online degree programs, and activities for youth and senior learners offered by Extended Studies. Participants will enjoy free refreshments and can receive discounts for on-site registration of select courses, and enter to win certificates toward course fees and other prizes. The free event will be in south Reno at the University's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, in the Nell J. Redfield Building. Parking is free. Free Days at National Parks - The first free day in 2018 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15. There are several more during 2018. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it. Free history presentations from Historic Reno Preservation Society - Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Take a virtual tour of Reno's Hillside Cemetery, featuring stories about the founding families of Reno and their connections to the history of our community, country, and world. Northwest Reno Library, 2325 Robb Drive, 6 p.m. State of the City Address - Thursday, January 18, 2018, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The address will be at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia Street in Reno. The event is free and open to the public. Attendance will be on a first-come, first-served basis. No RSVP is required for the general public, as all seating will be general admission. The Pioneer Center has seating space for 1,488 people. The theme is "Big Arts Little City," and the event will include arts and culture entertainment, in addition to the speech, which will begin at approximately 7 p.m. Scheduled performances include Controlled Burn Reno, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Sierra Nevada Ballet, TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada and A.V.A. Ballet Theatre. The National Anthem will be performed by the Note-Ables. Community Engagement Fair takes place prior to the State of the City address. The meet-and-greet style fair offers citizens an in-person opportunity to engage with their local government and learn about key city programs, provide input through surveys and discover how they can get involved with through a variety of commissions and boards. A variety of city departments from Arts, Culture and Special Events to Fire and Police will set up booths in the Pioneer Center's Exhibit Hall. Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 20, 2018. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, monthly, nature-focused hike for children of all ages from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF). Along with their parents and guardians, children will be able to explore a local park, identify and discover the natural world, play games, and contribute to ongoing surveys and bio-blitzes. Children will discover plants, animals, and the environment in their own backyard, as well as allow parents to experience and learn alongside their children. This month's program is at Idlewild Park, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. For more information, call (775) 410-1702. "Hall of Heroes" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - January 20 through April 15, 2018. Superheroes, gadgets, crime-fighters and spies are all featured in the Hall of Heroes exhibit, along with movie props, costumes, memorabilia and rare artifacts. This entertaining and educational exhibit will be at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, 1595 N. Sierra Street. (775) 785-5961. 2nd Annual Reno Women's March - Saturday, January 20 2018. The 2nd Annual Women's March is a celebration and rededication to the core principles that "Women's Rights are Human Rights" regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or age. The march begins at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Building in downtown Reno and goes to City Plaza next to the Virginia Street Bridge. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 20, 2018. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, January 27, 2018. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - January 30 through February 14, 2018. Now is the time to sign up for this series of Olympic-style competitions. The Games are open to citizens 50+. Grand Bridal Showcase & Greater Reno Women's Expo - Sunday, January 28, 2018. If you are about to get married, don't miss this elegant wedding event for couples planning their special day. Enter to win door prizes, win wedding gowns or join in the Cake Dives to win a pair of diamond ear rings for a bride or a gold band for the groom. Sample food from some of the best caterers, bakeries and restaurants in the area. Shop for all your wedding needs under one roof. "A Lion in Winter" at Bruka Theatre - opens Friday, January 26, 2018. A game of thrones for the stage: with sibling rivalry, adultery, and dungeons The Lion in Winter is comedic in tone and dramatic in action. This is Bruka's 25th anniversary season. The theater is one of several live play and show venues in the Reno area. Free history presentations from Historic Reno Preservation Society - Sunday, January 28, 2018. Reno is one of many examples of a small but thriving LGBTQ community. As far back as 1882, Reno had an LGBTQ presence, which the talk will cover through the Great Recession, including the history of the Reno Gay Rodeo and its effects on the world. Sierra View Library, 4001 S. Virginia Street (Reno Town Mall), 1:30 p.m. Super Bowl LII (52) - Super Bowl Sunday 2018 is on February 4. It will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. Justin Timberlake will be the featured performer during the halftime show.
