January happenings... Happy New Year! - January 1, 2017. Winter Break Camps and Activities - through January 6, 2017. To keep the kids occupied during winter break, check out the many things happening around the Truckee Meadows. Reno Bighorns Basketball - Tuesday, January 3, 2017. The Bighorns take on the Los Angeles D-Fenders at the Reno Events Center, tip off at 7 p.m. Other home games this month are on January 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 25, 27 and 29. Art Walk Reno - Thursday, January 5, 2017. Every first Thursday of the month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., see the works of local and regional artists on display in venues within the Reno Arts District, between Liberty Street and Second Street, and Virginia Street and Arlington Avenue. The walk begins at Liberty Fine Art Gallery, 100 W. Liberty Street in Reno. Purchase a ticket for $10, which includes a glass, raffle ticket and program. You might win a $200.00 voucher good towards any piece of art shown in the walk. There will be food and drink specials from participating businesses. A portion of all proceeds are donated to non-profit groups focused on art, education, and community. Winter Trails - January, 2017. Winter Trails is month-long event where you can try snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing at participating ski resorts and parks in the Lake Tahoe region and across the nation. People new to these sports will learn how easy it is to get started, pick up information about buying needed equipment, and get information about places to enjoy being outside during winter. Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, January 7, 14, 21, 28, 2017. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2017 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Harlem Globetrotters - Thursday, January 12, 2017. Combining athleticism, theater and comedy, the Harlem Globetrotters are a treat for the whole family. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m. and will be at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center Street. Tickets available online and at the box office. For more information, call (775) 335-8815. Sheep Dip Show - Friday and Saturday, January 13 - 14, 2017. This parody for charity is an annual event with skits, songs, dances and the infamous Shaft Award, exposing the foibles and follies of the Truckee Meadows. The show is performed by area locals, members of the media and a few of our (infamous) politicians. This year's supported charities are the Veterans Guest House and For Kids Foundation. The show will be at Eldorado Hotel Casino in Reno. Tickets online are $40 per person. For more information, call (775) 229-2793. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, January 14, 2017. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. This month, activities are inspired by the current exhibit "A Shared Legacy: Folk Art in America." Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wild Winter Weekends at Animal Ark - Saturday and Sunday, January 14 - 15 and February 18 - 19, 2017. Come enjoy Animal Ark's residents in a winter setting, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Animal Ark is at 1265 Deerlodge Road north of Reno. Take 395 north to Red Rock. Go right for 11.5 miles, then right on Deerlodge. 1-775-970-3111 (Must dial 1-775 even from Reno area). Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 16, 2017. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service - Monday, January 16, 2017. As part of the National MLK Day of Service, Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) will be hosting a bioblitz in Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Day of Service Bioblitz is free and open to volunteers of all ages. We will be cataloging all living things in the park as part of a annual phenology project, to garner a better understanding of the plants, animals, and other wildlife and how their populations are changing. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park is located on the corner of Coretta Way and Kennedy Drive in Reno. (775) 453-0566. Free UNR Extended Studies Open House - Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The community is invited to the free Spring 2017 UNR Extended Studies Open House to learn about the continuing education program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Come learn more about professional development short courses and certificates, academic credit courses and online degree programs, and activities for youth and senior learners offered by Extended Studies. Participants will enjoy free refreshments and can receive discounts for on-site registration of select courses, and enter to win certificates toward course fees and other prizes. The free event will be in south Reno at the University's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, in the Nell J. Redfield Building. Parking is free. Free Days at National Parks - The first free day in 2017 is on Monday, January 16. There are several more during 2017. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it. Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 21, 2017. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, monthly, nature-focused hike for children of all ages from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF). Along with their parents and guardians, children will be able to explore a local park, identify and discover the natural world, play games, and contribute to ongoing surveys and bio-blitzes. Children will discover plants, animals, and the environment in their own backyard, as well as allow parents to experience and learn alongside their children. This month's program is at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. For more information, call (775) 453-0240. "Toytopia" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - January 21 through April 16, 2017. Both grown-ups and kids will enjoy "Toytopia." It is inspirational for children and adults can revisit fun times from childhood. This entertaining and educational exhibit will be at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, 1595 N. Sierra Street. (775) 785-5961. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 21, 2017. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Fantasy Wedding Faire - Sunday, January 22, 2017. The American Heart Association's Fantasy Wedding Faire will be in the Downtown Reno Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Features a fashion show, various vendors, silent auction, and much more. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. The Reno Ballroom is at 401 N. Center Street. Motown the Musical at the Pioneer Center - Tuesday through Sunday, January 24 - 29, 2017. This show is about the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy's journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Tickets are available online and from the Pioneer Center box office, 100 S. Virginia Street in Reno. Brew HaHa 2017 - Friday, January 27, 2017. Brew HaHa is a benefit for Sierra Arts Foundation. You can sample over 100 beers from local, regional, and national breweries while enjoying live music by Mojo Green. VIP admission is 7 p.m., with general admission at 8 p.m. VIP Tickets are $65 (plus tax & fee), general admission is $50 (plus tax & fee). Each is $10 more the day of the event. Tickets are available online or by calling (775) 356-3300. Brew HaHa will be at The Nugget, 1100 Nugget Avenue in Sparks. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, January 28, 2017. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - January 28 through February 14, 2017. Now is the time to sign up for this series of Olympic-style competitions. The Games are open to citizens 50+. The deadline for all entries is Monday, January 23, 2017. Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rooster begins on January 28, 2017. This celebration is also known as the Chinese Spring Festival. Grand Bridal Showcase - Sunday, January 29, 2017. If you are about to get married, don't miss this elegant wedding event for couples planning their special day. Enter to win door prizes, win wedding gowns or join in the Cake Dives to win a pair of diamond ear rings for a bride or a gold band for the groom. Sample food from some of the best caterers, bakeries and restaurants in the area. Shop for all your wedding needs under one roof. Super Bowl LI (51) - Super Bowl Sunday 2017 is on February 5. It will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. Lady Gaga will be the featured performer during the halftime show. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - January 11 and 25, 2017, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel.
