January is... Winter Break Camps and Activities - through January 8, 2016. To keep the kids occupied during winter break, check out the many things happening around the Truckee Meadows. Art Walk Reno - Thursday, January 7, 2016. Every first Thursday of the month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., see the works of local and regional artists on display in venues within the Reno Arts District, between Liberty Street and Second Street, and Virginia Street and Arlington Avenue. The walk begins at Liberty Fine Art Gallery, 100 W. Liberty Street in Reno. Purchase a ticket for $10, which includes a glass, raffle ticket and program. You might win a $200.00 voucher good towards any piece of art shown in the walk. There will be food and drink specials from participating businesses. A portion of all proceeds are donated to non-profit groups focused on art, education, and community. Winter Trails - January, 2016. Winter Trails is month-long event where you can try snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing at participating ski resorts and parks in the Lake Tahoe region. People new to these sports will learn how easy it is to get started, pick up information about buying needed equipment, and get information about places to enjoy being outside during winter. Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - starts on Saturday, January 9, 2016. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2016 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Sssnakes Alive! - opens Saturday, January 9, 2016. This exhibit will be at Reno's Wilbur D. May Museum and continues through April 10, 2016. "Sssnakes Alive!" is an interactive exhibit that explores the world North America's four indigenous venomous snakes - copperhead, cottonmouth, coral, and rattlesnake. We're talking 20 live venomous snakes along with interactive stations and imaginative displays. Library Book Sale - Saturday through Sunday, Janury 9 - 17, 2016. Read Again Bookstore, a function of Friends of Washoe County Library, holds several book sales during the year. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. A day for Friends members only is on Friday, January 8, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join at the door. All other days are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, January 9, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 9, 2016. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, monthly, nature-focused hike for children of all ages from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF). Along with their parents and guardians, children will be able to explore a local park, identify and discover the natural world, play games, and contribute to ongoing surveys and bio-blitzes. Children will discover plants, animals, and the environment in their own backyard, as well as allow parents to experience and learn alongside their children. This month's program is at Huffaker Hills Trailhead, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. For more information, call (775) 453-0240. Grand Bridal Showcase - Sunday, January 10, 2016. If you are about to get married, don't miss this elegant wedding event for couples planning their special day. Enter to win door prizes, win wedding gowns or join in the Cake Dives to win a pair of diamond ear rings for a bride or a gold band for the groom. Sample food from some of the best caterers, bakeries and restaurants in the area. Shop for all your wedding needs under one roof. The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Nugget Pavilion, 1100 Nugget Avenue in Sparks. General admission is $10. Harlem Globetrotters - Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Combining athleticism, theater and comedy, the Harlem Globetrotters are a treat for the whole family. The show starts at 7 p.m. and will be at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center Street. For more information, call (775) 335-8815. Reno Bighorns Basketball - Wednesday, January 13, 2016. The Bighorns take on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at the Reno Events Center, tip off at 7 p.m. Other home games this month are on January 17, 18, 23, and 31. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 16, 2016. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 18, 2016. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Free Days at National Parks - The first in 2016 is on Monday, January 18. There are several more during 2016. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it. Free UNR Extended Studies Open House - Wednesday, January 20, 2016, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The community is invited to the free Spring 2016 Extended Studies Open House as part of its ongoing celebration of 125 years serving Nevada's continuing education needs at the University of Nevada, Reno. Come learn more about professional development short courses and certificates, academic credit courses and online degree programs, and activities for youth and senior learners offered by Extended Studies. Participants can also receive discounts for on-site registration of select courses, and enter to win a new iPad and other prizes. The free event will be at the University's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, in the Nell J. Redfield Building in south Reno. Parking is free. Sheep Dip Show - Friday and Saturday, January 22 - 23, 2016. This parody for charity is an annual event with skits, songs, dances and the infamous Shaft Award, exposing the foibles and follies of the Truckee Meadows. The show is performed by area locals, members of the media and a few of our (infamous) politicians. This year's supported charities are Evelyn Mount Community Outreach and Honor Flight Nevada. The show will be at The Nugget in Sparks. Tickets online are $35 per person. Also available by calling (775) 356-3300. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, January 23, 2016. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - Now is the time to sign up for this series of Olympic-style competitions. The Games are open to citizens 50+ and will be held from January 30 through February 14, 2016. The deadline for all entries is Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Fantasy Wedding Faire - Sunday, January 24, 2016. The American Heart Association's Fantasy Wedding Faire will be in the Reno Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Features a fashion show, various vendors, silent auction, and much more. The Reno Ballroom is at 401 N. Center Street. Reno Historic Preservation Society Presentations - Wednesday, January 27, 2016. Free presentations from the Historic Reno Preservation Society are open to the public. These programs are for you if you are an avid history buff or just want to know more about how and why Reno and northern Nevada got to where we are today. This one is titled "Snapshots in Time: The Last 10,000 Years in the Truckee Meadows." Programs are held each fourth Wednesday of the month through April, 2016. Brew HaHa - Friday, January 29, 2016. Brew HaHa is a benefit for Sierra Arts Foundation. You can sample over 100 beers from local, regional, and national breweries while enjoying live music and artist village. VIP admission is 7 p.m., with general admission at 8 p.m. VIP Tickets are $65 (plus tax & fee), general admission is $50 (plus tax & fee). Each is $10 more the day of the event. A Note-Able Evening of Romance - Winter Masquerade Ball - Saturday, January 30, 2016. Note-Able Music Therapy Services is hosting the 12th annual A Note-Able Evening of Romance at 8 p.m. in the Atlantis Grand Ballroom. Evening of Romance is a magical evening of music, dance, champagne and desserts. The evening features the Reno Jazz Orchestra with David Hayes, The Note-Ables, and dancers of the Ballroom of Reno, along with silent and live auction. Guests are encouraged to wear formal wear and masks. Tickets are $50 in advance, $55 at the door, $450 for a reserved table of ten, and are available online or at (775) 324-5521. Proceeds go to support Note-Able Music Therapy Services. Mardi Crawl - Saturday, January 30, 2016. This is a new event on Reno's beer crawl calendar. Collect beads at every bar, enter costume contests, get pictures in the photo booth, hotel discounts, and more. Starts at 8 p.m. and goes till 6 a.m., for those that last that long. Super Bowl 50 - Super Bowl Sunday 2016 is on February 7. It will be played at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - January 13 and 27, 2016, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel.
