Groundhog Day - On Friday, February 2, 2024, Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, or not. Depending on which way it goes, Phil's 100% accurate powers of prediction will indicate an early spring or six more weeks of winter.

Social Science: Sci-Fi Strikes Back, Again - Saturday, February 3, 2024, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Use the force, go back to the future, phone home, and get beamed up during an evening of sci-fi exploration inspired by galaxies far, far away. Get hands-on with the science that makes the fiction fantastic at this intergalactic event. Labs, lectures and experiences included. 21+ event. At The Discovery Museum, 490 Center St. in Reno. Tickets available online. Advance ticket purchase strongly recommended for this popular event.

Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24, 2024. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. These family-friendly shows provide welcome relief from the frosty weather during the depths of winter. The 2023 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea.

"Expedition Dinosaur: Rise of the Mammals" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - through May 5, 2024. An interactive exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. Featuring fan favorite stations and brand new animatronics and experiences, this exhibit is not to be missed and makes for the perfect field trip or way to spend a winter day. The entry fee is $13 for adults, $11 for children 3 to 17 and seniors. Kids under 3 are free. Hours at the Wilbur D. May Museum are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Geriatric and Dermatology Clinic - Saturday, February 3, 2024, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The Geriatric Clinic provides services and care to the elderly population. The Dermatology Clinic provides quality care and medical service to patients with any problems related to the skin. Clinics are by appointment only. Washoe County Library Book Sale - February 3 - 11, 2024. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. This is your chance to get big bargains on books and other media while supporting your Washoe County Library System. Sale hours are every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Preview day for Friends members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door.

2024 Presidential Preference Primary Election Day - Tuesday, February 6, 2024. There will be numerous locations for voting in person on election day. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can same-day register to vote if you need to do so. Refer to the "Vote Centers" link in my article for election day polling place locations.

Rosewood Science Series - Wednesday, February 7, 2023, 6 p.m. Free and fun science talks from guest speakers every first and third Wednesday. This talk is "Ants of the Great Basin" with UNR Ph.D. (in ecology, evolution and conservation biology) Stephanie Coronado. At the Rosewood Nature Study Area, 6800 Pembroke Drive in Reno.

Heart Beat of Reno: Valentine's Day Block Party - Friday and Saturday, February 9 - 10, 2024. 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday, 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday. Come celebrate love at the Heart Beat of Reno Festival, a two-day Block Party extravaganza featuring over 45 of Reno's best house DJs, interactive art and activities, local vendors, delicious food, much more. Chinese New Year - Saturday, February 10, 2024. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday. Celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24, 2024.

Second Saturdays at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, February 10, 2024. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays.

Super Bowl LVIII (58) Parties - Super Bowl Sunday 2024 is on Sunday, February 11. It will be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. The half-time show will be headlined by Usher.

Free Classes about Gardening in Nevada - Bartley Ranch Series - Beginning on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 and continuing every Tuesday through March 26. Learn from experts about growing a vegetable garden and other plants in northern Nevada. At Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Women's Clinic - Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Women's Clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, IUD placements, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. The General and Pediatrics Clinic provides services for adults including screenings and diagnosis, lab services, x-rays, EKGs, blood pressure monitoring, some treatments and referrals. February Junior Naturalist Program from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, February 17, 2024, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This month, we'll be at Dorothy McAlinden Park and themed "Tales from the Field." Get ready to learn about basics of zoology through fun games and hands-on activities. The program is free, but you must register to attend.

President's Day - Monday, February 19, 2024. Schools, libraries and government offices will be closed.

Discover Science Lecture Series at UNR - Thursday, February 22, 2024, 7 p.m. Jevin West is an Associate Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington. His lecture is "The Rise of Misinformation In and About Science." Turning the proverbial microscope on science itself, this talk will explore some of the mechanisms spreading misinformation in and about science and propose interventions to reduce its spread. This lecture is at the UNR Davidson Mathematics and Science Center, 1664 North Virginia Street in Reno. It's free, but you are requested to register to attend.

Junior Ranger Adventure Day - Saturday, February 24, 2024, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Join Park Rangers to learn about ranching and farming history in Nevada, take home new seeds to plant in spring, and have fun as a Washoe County Junior Ranger learning about the area and how you can make a difference. Ice Skating at the Grand Sierra Resort - season ends on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Ice skating is also available at the Jennifer M. O'Neal Community Ice Arena is south Reno.

North Lake Tahoe SNOWFEST! - February 29 through March 10, 2024. SNOWFEST is a ten day winter festival supporting local non profits, public programs, student organizations, and educational scholarships. Just a few of the events include the Tap Haus Block Party, SnowFest Fireworks, Polar Bear Swim, Tahoe City Dog Pull, Milk Jug Curling, SnowFest Parade, Wine N Ice Sculpture Competition and lots more. Located in Tahoe City and King's Beach.
