Groundhog Day - On Saturday, February 2, 2019, Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, or not. Depending on which way it goes, Phil's 100% accurate powers of prediction will indicate an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, February 2, 9, 16, 23, 2019. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2019 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Washoe County Library Book Sale - February 2 - 10, 2019. Sales are in the book store next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. This is your chance to get big bargains on books and other media while supporting your Washoe County Library System. Sale hours are every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preview day for Friends members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Saturday, February 2, 2019, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The Women's Clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. Pregnancy care is not offered at this time. It is free to be seen at the clinics, but certain referrals may not be covered and the cost is the patients' responsibility. Donations are gladly accepted, with the traditional donation being $5. All clinics are held at the Family Medicine Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, located at the corner of 17th St. and East Stadium Way, northeast of Mackay Stadium. (775) 682-8646. Super Bowl LIII (53) Parties - Super Bowl Sunday 2019 is on February 3. It will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. Maroon 5 will be the featured performer during the halftime show. "Mindbender Mansion" at The Discovery - opens Sunday, February 3, 2019. Enter the wonderfully puzzling world of Mindbender Mansion, an eclectic place full of brainteasers and interactive challenges guaranteed to test the brain power and problem solving skills of even the most experienced puzzlers. Adults, families, and children alike will enjoy exercising their minds as they try to master each of the 40 individual brainteasers and the 4 group activities in this fun and unconventional mansion. The Discovery Museum is at 490 S. Center Street in Reno. 80th Session of the Nevada State Legislature - Monday, February 4, 2019. The Nevada Legislature meets every other year (biennial) for 120 consecutive days. Democrats are firmly in control of Nevada's government following the 2018 midterm election. In addition, Nevada is now the first state in the U.S. with an overall female majority in its Legislature. Free Classes about Gardening in Nevada - Bartley Ranch Series - Beginning on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 and continuing every Tuesday through March 26. Learn from experts about growing a vegetable garden and other plants in northern Nevada. All classes will be at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The first class it titled "Selecting and Caring for Fruit Trees." 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. State of the City Address - Tuesday, February 5, 2019, 6 p.m. The address, by Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, will be at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, 4590 S. Virginia Street in Reno. The event is free and open to the public. The theme is "Changing the Game in the Biggest Little City," and the event will revolve around sports and recreation. Event parking will be available at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center facility. Community Engagement Fair takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., prior to the State of the City address. Learn more about our local athletic programs, ranging from youth sports to Nevada Wolf Pack athletics and more. City of Reno staff and departments will also have informational booths and exhibits. Chinese New Year - The Year of the Pig begins on February 5, 2019. This celebration is also known as the Chinese Spring Festival. The Sheep Show - Thursday through Saturday, February 7 - 9, 2019. This is the annual Wild Sheep Foundation Convention and Sporting Expo. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center exhibit hall features more than 400 exhibits of the finest guides and outfitters from North America and around the globe plus top of the line retailers selling gear, guns, art, taxidermy, jewelry, furs and every other outdoor item you need. Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience (YWCE) - Saturday, February 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event is part of The Sheep Show. Over twenty different hands-on learning experiences will be available, with the goal to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife conservationists. No need to buy a day pass to The Sheep Show exhibit hall, as the youth area takes place outside the exhibit hall. However, an adult who brings a youth to the YWCE can obtain a day pass for admittance to the exhibit hall. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, February 9, 2019, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. Enjoy hands-on art activities, storytelling, a docent-guided tour, live performances, and community collaborations. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, February 9, 2019. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Engineering Spacecraft." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. The first exhibition game before the regular season for Reno 1868 FC will be against Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes. The team is affiliated with the Earthquakes. Games will be played at Greater Nevada Field (home of Reno Aces baseball). Tickets start at $15 for general admission and can be purchased online. Classix Series - Timeless Masters - Saturday and Sunday, February 9 and 10, 2019. This Reno Philharmonic performance at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in Reno will feature works by classical masters Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, piano and orchestra will be on glittering display at this concert. Audience favorite and Van Cliburn-winning pianist, Jon Nakamatsu, returns to perform Tchaikovsky's might Piano Concerto No. 1. Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Sunday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.. Tickets are available online. Junior Naturalist Program from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, February 9, 2019, 10 a.m to 12 noon. During this session, we will be learning about "Geology and Volcanoes," and how northern Nevada is rich in geological history. This program will be at Huffaker Park at 1160 E. Huffaker Lane in south Reno. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, outdoor program for children of all ages. You can register online. (775) 360-6068. Valentine's Day Dining and Activities - Thursday, February 14, 2019. Valentine's Day this year falls on a Thursday. There are romantic Valentine's Day dining opportunities available, along with other fun things to with your sweetheart. "The Lost World of Dragons" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - through May 12, 2019. The Lost World of Dragons is a world of fantasy and adventure. Discover the stories and mythology of dragons throughout history and around the world. Get a thrill from larger-than-life animatronic dragons. Try out a virtual reality experience that lets you ride a flying dragon. Sit on a throne and sneak through a dragon's lair, and much more. This entertaining and educational exhibit will be at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, 1595 N. Sierra Street. (775) 785-5961. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, February 16, 2019. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - The Games are open to citizens 50+ and will be held at various places around the area from January 30 through February 14, 2019. President's Day - Monday, February 18, 2019. Schools, libraries and government offices will be closed. "Something Rotten!" at the Pioneer Center - Friday through Sunday, February 15 - 17, 2019. This show at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Set in 1595, this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write a hit play. Hooks, Hoses, and Houses: Nevada's Historic Fire Stations - Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Learn about Reno and Nevada history. This free program is brought to you by the Historic Reno Preservation Society. It is one of a series, with others scheduled in March, April and May. At Northwest Reno Library, 2325 Robb Drive, 5:30 p.m. "Galileo - Stars In His Eyes" from Bruka Theater for Children - Thursday through Saturday, February 21 - 23 and March 7 - 9, 2019, 11 a.m. The play is written from the point of view of Galileo's daughter, Virginia. Both a history lesson on Galileo's work and a story about family connections, this play is great for children and adults alike. Bruka Theatre is at 99 North Virginia Street in Reno. "Ailey II" at the Pioneer Center - Friday, February 22, 2019, 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, the company embodies his pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Tickets available online. The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is at 100 S. Virginia Street in Reno. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, February 23, 2019. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Washoe Tribes and Tourism - Sunday, February 24, 2019. Learn about Reno and Nevada history. This free program is brought to you by the Historic Reno Preservation Society. It is one of a series, with others scheduled in March, April and May. At Downtown Reno Library, 301 S. Center Street, 12:30 p.m. North Lake Tahoe SnowFest - February 28 - March 10, 2019. SnowFest is a multi-day winter carnival celebrating life in the High Sierra, with events and activities for all ages. Snow events will be at Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Diamond Peak, and Northstar California.
