Free Classes about Gardening in Nevada - Beginning on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 and continuing every Tuesday through March 29. Learn from experts about growing a vegetable garden and other plants in northern Nevada. All classes will be at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The first class it titled "Selecting and Caring for Fruit Trees." Groundhog Day - On February 2, Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, or not. Depending on which way it goes, Phil's 100% accurate powers of prediction will indicate an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, February 4, 2016. This presentation features science author David Quammen. Lectures start at 7 p.m. in the Redfield Auditorium in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Admission is free and on a first come basis. Reno Bighorns Basketball - Friday and Saturday, February 5 - 6, 2016. The Bighorns take on the Idaho Stampede at the Reno Events Center, tip off at 7 p.m. Other home games this month are on February 19, 23, and 27. Super Bowl 50 - Super Bowl Sunday 2016 is on February 7. There are lots of big parties in the Reno area where you can enjoy food, drink, and cheer for your favorite team with lots of other fans. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - The Games are open to citizens 50+ and will be held at various places around the area from January 30 through February 14, 2016. Great Basin Geology - Monday, February 8, 2016. This free talk, sponsored by Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, will feature three Nevada scientists discussing earthquake hazards, fault lines, ancient volcanoes, and geothermal energy of the Great Basin / Truckee Meadows region. The talk will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the California Building at Idlewild Park in Reno. TMPF members will get free beer, wine, and light provisions. Chinese New Year - 2016 is the Year of the Monkey, beginning on February 8. This celebration is also known as the Chinese Spring Festival. Broadway Comes to Reno - The Book of Mormon - This show at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will play from February 9 through 14, 2016. Broadway Comes to Reno is popular, so get your tickets in advance if you want to go. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, February 13, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. The theme on this Second Saturday is "Celebrate the Year of the Monkey," about the Chinese Lunar New Year. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, February 13, 2016. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Piloting Spacecraft with Richard Brong." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Valentine's Day this year falls on a Sunday, giving you a good day and evening to do something special with your special sweetheart. There is some romantic Valentine's Day dining available, and other fun things to do as well. President's Day - Monday, February 15, 2016. Schools, libraries and government offices will be closed. Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series - Tuesday, February 16, 2016. This free class is titled "From Buds to Vines and Grapes to Wine," presented by Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Joe Bernardo. It covers the basic skills of growing grapes and making wine in Nevada. Classes are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, February 20, 2016. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Democratic Presidential Caucus in Washoe County - Saturday, February 20, 2016. The caucus is a partisan process, so you must be registered to vote as a Democrat to participate. The Democratic Party allows same-day registration to participate. Republican Presidential Caucus in Washoe County - Tuesday, February 23, 2016. The caucus is a partisan process, so you must be registered to vote as a Republican to participate. The Republican Party requires voters to be registered by February 13, 2016. Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series - Tuesday, February 23, 2016. This free class is titled "Dealing with Pests in the Landscape and Garden," presented by Cooperative Extension Urban Integrated Pest Management and Pesticide Safety Program. Classes are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. A Wells Avenue Home Restoration - Wednesday, February 24, 2016. This free program is brought to you by the Historic Reno Preservation Society. It is one of a series, with others scheduled in March and April. All programs start at 7 p.m. and are held in the Laxalt Theater in UNR's Nelson Building, 401 W. Second Street in downtown Reno. These presentations are popular - arrive early if you want to get in. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, February 27, 2016. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. 65th Annual "Doctor's Wives" Rummage Sale - Saturday, February 27, 2016. This huge rummage sale will feature clothes, furniture, electronics, sports equipment, jewelry, and more. It will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center, 1350 N. Wells Avenue in Reno. The sale is a service of the Alliance with the Washoe County Medical Society (AWCMS). Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Weekly performances through March 12, 2016. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2016 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 200, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. Sssnakes Alive! at the Wilbur D. May Museum - On exhibit through April 10, 2016. Snakes are the animals everyone lives to hate, but they are fascinating creatures and you can learn their ins and outs at the "Sssnakes Alive!" exhibit at Reno's Wilbur D. May Museum. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - February 10 and 24, 2016, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel.
