Big events during August, 2016 include...
Reno Aces Baseball - Monday, August 1, 2016. The Reno Aces' first home game in August is vs. the Fresno Grizzlies. There will be 14 more home games at Greater Nevada Field during the month. Other opponents will include the Salt Lake Bees, Sacramento River Cats, and Tacoma Rainiers. Hot August Nights in Reno and Sparks - Tuesday through Sunday, August 2 - 7, 2016. This is the big one, Reno's huge celebration of classic cars and rock 'n roll. The crowds are big, but so is the fun, and much of it is free. Get to various venues in Reno and Sparks for lots of different things to see and do. Visit the Hot August Nights calendar on the website for details. Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada - Opening Friday, August 5, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno for a wide-ranging overview and understanding of the most accomplished work being created by more than thirty artists living and working in Nevada today. The exhibit runs through October 23, 2016. Classical Tahoe's 'All About Mozart' Family Concert - Sunday, August 7, 2016, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Welcome to a free, interactive educational concert where we will explore many facets of one of the world's greatest musical geniuses: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The concert will be proceeded by musical games for children of all ages, followed by the full Classical Tahoe Orchestra performing selections from Mozart's most famous compositions. It will be at the Jetblue Pavilion at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village. It's free, but you must register online to attend. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, August 13, 2016. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. This month's topic is "Little Burners," in recognition of the upcoming Burning Man festival. Enjoy free admission and activities at the Museum. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reno Pirate Crawl - Saturday, August 13, 2016. Arrgh! The annual Reno Pirate Crawl begins at 8 p.m. in downtown Reno. Put on your best pirate or wench garb to join this pirate party as it moves among several bars and restaurants. It's only $5 to get on board. You can buy cups online or at the start bar on the night the pirate ship sails. Special features include Pirate Encampments, costume contests and giveaways. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, August 13, 2016. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Food in Space with Chef Craig Rodrigue." Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information. Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival - Saturday, August 13, 2016. The site of this 31st annual event is Bowers Mansion Regional Park, south of Reno in Washoe Valley. Tickets are $25 at the gate or $20 in advance if purchased by August 8. Kids 12 and under are free. Bring a picnic and enjoy the music from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No dogs except service animals. For even more bluegrass fun, go camping at nearby Davis Creek Regional Park, where there will be free music and jam sessions. Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series - Saturday and Sunday, August 13 - 14, 2016. Top professional racers present high flying action at the Wild West Motorsports Park just east of Sparks off I80 at Mustang exit 23. The grandstands at this park offer unobstructed views of the track. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival - Through Sunday, August 21, 2016. This 44th season of the Festival features two main plays in addition to all of the other shows and activities making up this exceptional event at Sand Harbor on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Raise the River - Thursday, August 18, 2016, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. You are invited to the inaugural Raise the River fundraising event for Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). It will be in the Sensory Garden at Idlewild Park in Reno. Prepare to have your senses ignited by culinary delights by celebrity chef Mark Estee, libations, entertainment and fun sensory activities. Throughout the evening, guests will be treated to excellent live music and other fun entertainment by local performers. This is a 21+ event. Tickets are available online. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, August 20, 2016. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Reno Greek Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 19 - 21, 2016. Sample authentic Greek cuisine along with traditional Greek dance, music, desserts and imports. It's a fun and family-friendly Mediterranean atmosphere. Hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 12 noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church, 4795 Lakeside Drive in Reno. Music in the Garden Concert Series - Sunday, August 21, 2016. Join the May Arboretum Society for a free concert in northern Nevada's botanical treasure. Some seating is available, but feel free to bring your own chairs and light refreshments. The concert will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. SOS Washoe Back to School Family Fundraiser - Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Join SOS Washoe for a Back to School Family Fundraiser at Rancharrah, 6001 Talbot Lane in Reno. The night will feature carnival games, fresh barbecue, and live entertainment. The event will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It's free, but any and all donations are gladly accepted. For more information, call (775) 527-2738. National Park Service Centennial - Thursday through Sunday, August 25 - 28, 2016. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service will free admission days at every one of over 400 units of the national parks and historic sites administered for all Americans by the NPS. Reno Tahoe Music Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 26 - 28, 2016. Enjoy three nights of entertainment (two acts each evening) at Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater in Bartley Ranch Regional Park. Shows each evening start at 6:15 p.m. Advance tickets are available online. Food trucks will be available for your dining pleasure. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, August 27, 2016. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nevada Humane Society Duck Race and Festival - Sunday, August 21, 2016. Enjoy a day of family-friendly fun at Wingfield Park in Reno, topped off by the big duck race in the Truckee River to raise funds and awareness for Nevada Humane Society shelter and pet adoptions. Adopt ducks for a chance to win the grand prize - a 2016 Toyota Corolla from Dick Campagni's Carson City Toyota. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. CANFEST International Canned Beer Festival - Saturday, August 27, 2016. This tasting festival is dedicated to craft beers poured exclusively from cans. Over 100 beers will be available for sampling, from U.S. brewers and some from around the world. At the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno. VIP admission is at 5 p.m., general admission from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Reno Aloha Festival - Saturday, August 27, 2016, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The 1st annual Reno Aloha Festival will be at Reno's Wingfield Park. This free event is a cultural showcase, preserving the unique traditions of the Islands. Experience the Pacific Islands in dance, music and food. Shop the various vendors selling Polynesian merchandise and let the kids enjoy Keiki Village for fun interactive activities such as arts/crafts, hula lessons and Island stories. Burning Man 2016 - Sunday, August 28 through Monday, September 5, 2016. Burning Man is held in the Black Rock Desert north of Reno. The 2016 art theme in Black Rock City will be "Da Vinci's Workshop." Grow Your Own, Nevada! - Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Beginners and veteran gardeners can learn both basic and advanced techniques with some help from "Grow Your Own, Nevada!" gardening classes. There is a series of 8 classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) through September 22, presented by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE). It's $15 per class or $60 for the whole series. Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off - Wednesday through Sunday, August 31 to September 5, 2016. Come to Victorian Square in Sparks for family fun and entertainment at America's biggest and best free rib festival. PTSD Discussion Group Meetings - Wednesdays, August 10 and 24, 2016, 6 p.m. VFW Post 9211 is sponsoring a PTSD discussion group that meets at the historic "Battle Born" bunker post every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. All individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD are invited to join this group. This is NOT restricted to veterans or VFW members. Any member of the community is invited, including civilians and service persons such police, firefighters, and medical personnel including EMT's and paramedics. This discussion group IS NOT formal therapy and is based on the original model of gatherings of Vietnam veterans before PTSD was recognized as a treatable condition by the VA or civilian medical community.
