Big events during April, 2020 include...

All Fools' Day - Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Also known as April Fool's Day. Don't get caught being foolish.

Shooting the West - April 1 - 5, 2020. Canceled. The ultimate Nevada Photography Experience is an annual event held in Winnemucca, about 160 miles east of Reno on I80. There are numerous workshops, symposium, photo contests, talks from top photographers, field trips, and more. Registration is available online or by calling (775) 623-5071.

The Passion according to St. Matthew by J. S. Bach - first performance on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Canceled. Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (TOCCATA) presents J. S. Bach's masterpiece, The Passion according to St. Matthew. The program will feature selections from part two of The Passion. Tickets are available at the door or online. General admission is $30 adults, $25 seniors, young people under 23 are free. Preferred seating is $40 and $15 for youth/students. Advance tickets are available online.

Discover Your Parks Free Walks - Tuesday, April 2, 2020. The first walk in the 2020 series will be at Sparks Marina Park. More walks at Reno and Sparks parks will be held every Thursday evening through September. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is leading these free walks. Each week, you can explore a new location and learn about the unique and varied ecology and history of parks in our area. Walks are open to everyone.

Grow Your Own, Nevada! Gardening Classes - Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Spring 2020 Grow Your Own, Nevada! workshops will be held twice weekly during April, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Classes are for homeowners and other small scale growers. They concentrate on imparting basic horticultural information and also provides information about new and alternative growing methods. Classes will be online only. The registration fee is being waived, but you still must register to attend the online classes.

Reno Aces Baseball - Thursday, April 9, 2020. Update: The Aces' opening home game has been canceled. We will publish the new opening game date when it becomes available.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, April 11, 2020. Canceled. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. There is a different theme each month. Enjoy live performances, hands-on art activities, storytelling and live performances.

Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, April 11, 2020. Canceled. Admission is $12 per person for children and adults, which also includes admission to the Museum and free refreshments. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information.

Free Easter Egg Hunts - Saturday, April 11, 2020. Canceled. There are several free Easter Egg hunts around Reno and up at Lake Tahoe on this day before Easter. Some of these are big productions. Check out my list to find one near you.

Easter Sunday - April 12, 2020

Easter Brunch and Dining - Sunday, April 12, 2020. Canceled. You don't have to cook up a big meal on this holiday. Enjoy Easter Sunday brunch or dinner at any of several venues around the Reno / Sparks area.

Free April Events & Programs at the Washoe County Library - Some activities may be available online. The Washoe County Library System features different programs and events every month. There are those for everyone in the family and some suited to certain age groups. Each library branch hosts certain events that are unique to that branch. All activities are free and open to the public.

"The Animation Academy" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - through May 10, 2020. (Note: The May Museum is supposed to re-open to the public on April 6.) This fun and interactive exhibition explores the history of animation, from traditional hand drawn cel to computer. Read the stories of real-life animators, see tools of the trade, watch classic cartoons, and try your own hand at animating. Featuring the world's largest 3D zoetrope, photo ops, hands-on art stations, and much more. The Wilbur D. May Museum is in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, 1595 N. Sierra Street. Baby Animal Days at Andelin Family Farm - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, April 9 - 11, 16 - 18 and 23 - 25, 2020, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. This event features farm babies, including chicks, ducklings, bunnies, piglets, lambs, goat kids and calves along with our other friendly and cute farm animals. Farm visitors will be able to hold and pet chicks, as well as interact with and pet goat kids, lambs and calves. Admission is $8 per person Thursdays and Fridays, $9 on Saturdays and includes hay ride, cow train ride, fun track, face painting, bunny hop activity, straw bale maze, barn yard activities and face painting (Saturdays only). Pony and horse rides are $5 per ride. On April 9 and 10 only, there is an Easter Egg Hunt from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., $5 per participant. The farm is at 8100 Pyramid Way in Sparks. (775) 530-8032.

Free Admission to National Parks - Saturday, April 18, 2020. On the first day of National Park Week, it's free admission to all parks and other sites operated by the National Park Service. This includes parks around the west like Yosemite, Lassen Volcanic, Death Valley, and Great Basin. Other fees, such as for overnight camping and cabin rentals, will still apply. Be sure to check of your park of choice is open.

Reno Riverwalk Wine Walk - Saturday, April 18, 2020. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit one of the participating merchants selling glasses with $20 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Earth Day - Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Earth Day Celebrations - Sunday, April 19, 2020. Reno's traditional Earth Day Celebration at Idlewild Park has been canceled for 2020. Meanwhile, check my article for more Earth Day events in Reno and up at Tahoe Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. Note that some of these have been either canceled or postponed.

58th Annual Reno Jazz Festival - Thursday to Saturday, April 23 - 25, 2020. Canceled. The Reno Jazz Festival brings to Reno both talented students and renowned professional artists. There will also be many workshops with some of the finest clinicians and performers in the country. Concerts will be at venues on campus at the University of Nevada, Reno. The website has complete information about the concerts. Tickets can be purchased online. There is no convenience fee on tickets purchased in person at the Lawlor Events Center Box Office. Monthly Reno Beer Crawl - Saturday, April 25, 2020. This event is in downtown Reno where all of the participating bars, pubs, and restaurants are within walking (or crawling) distance. It costs $5 to participate and you can just show up at one of the start bars - advance tickets not required. Crawling is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

49th Annual Virginia City Grand Prix - Saturday and Sunday, April 25 - 26, 2020. (Rescheduled - dates yet to be announced.) Experience legendary racing in historic Virginia City where thousands of motocross riders challenge themselves in the surrounding hills. Racing takes place both days. This being Virginia City, there will be lots of related activities and things to do while the motocross racers are zipping through town and around the rugged high desert.
